4th Generation Brake cleaning questions (Pics included)

Hey guys, recently my brakes are covered with rust and dirt. It also making the squeaking noise. So I decide to go to Canadian Tire and get a brake cleaner to do some DIY chores. But, I come up some of the questions. Since there are 4 pictures and I want to make it a little bit easier to read. I put the questions in the picture.

So the first question is when you apply the brake cleaner, where do we apply?

Second, I see some rust at the back of the wheel and I can't remove it by cloth and water, can I use Acetone? (concentrate or dilute?)

Third, the front side of the wheel without ornament. After get rid of all the dirty residues, is it neccessary to lubricate them?

Fifth, do we need to lubricate before putting it back on? (ie. WD-40?)

Last question... When I try to take the front wheel off I notice there is a pin attached on the centre. How to remove it?

THANKS!

1.spray that cleaner everywhere ... go wild with it.

2. make sure you dont get the aceatone all over or it might damage the finsh on the out side (if it spills there)

3.clean that how ever

4. no idea

5. dont remove it unless your working on the drive axal or the rear hub. and it's a clotter pin (sp?) basicaly bend the pins flat and it pulls right out. to put it back push it in and split the pins.

So basically you don't need to lubricate all the nuts and holes?

You can lube the lug nuts if you want.. but it's not required. It won't hurt anything and will help reduce the risk of stripping it out in rare occurances. But to be honest, it's hard to fuck up lug nuts.

1. Clean both sides of the rotor.

I'd also remove the caliper and pads. Clean them off too.

Tie the caliper to the spring with a piece of string, ziptie, wire, etc... till your ready for reassembly. Don't let it hang by the brake hose.

Apply disc brake goop on the back of the pads. And maybe lube up the slider pins.

4. You can apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the wheel stud.

1. LIke someone else said spray it everywhere. However it looks like it may be time for some new brake pads. It may jsut be the angle of the picture but looks like the are about gone. If that is the case. Replace them have the rotors turned and make sure you put the lube on the backside of the pads where it contacts the calipers. Then make sure you pull the pins and lube those up relaly good with high temp grease.

2. Sand paper. fine sand paper at that.

3. No reason to lube because the lug nuts are what actually support the wheel. NOt going to do any good really to lube but if you want you can.

4. Dont ahve to lubricate but can put some anti-sieze to hepl prevent problems later on down the road.

5. Repeat what someone else said, you only remove this when you are removing the CV axle. Otherwise there is no need to. Unless you want to remove it to try and get some of the rust off. Just take a pair of side cutter, wire cutters, whatever you want to call them. The heavy duty cutters not the wire strippers. bend the part back straigh and then use the cutters to pull it out. You can get replacement cotter pins pretty mcuh anywhere so if the rust is just bothering you replace them.

Take an empty windshield washer jug and cut the top off, and put it under the brake disc before you spray, so the dirty solvent doen't stain and ruin your floor.

You do not need to remove that thing (cotter Pin) It is there to hold your wheel bearing in. Leave that alone. You can wet a rag with brake cleaner and wipe out what you see there, and put some grease back into that area to keep dirt out if you want.

The rust you see on your wheel, you can get a wire brush and clean it off. (brass brush).

I personnally coat the wheel / disc contact area with a little anti seize (use a sponge) and that stops the wheel from being stuck by rust. Same thing with the brake rotor and hub

THANKS!
do not remove that pin.
if you do that, most likely that pin will break cos of rust.
you can use some rust remover and spray a coat of paint over it.

you must use high temp spray paint cos regular paint will not do as brakes run really hot.

WD40 will not help in lubing the nut, cos WD40 will dry away in minutes. Use high temp grease or just grease. Not excessively though.

clean the front disc brakes with brake cleaner. Spray the pads.
if you want to spray paint the rotor, that can be done also. but spray paint where the pads do not touch the rotors.

Lug nuts are NOT recommended to be lubed for safety reasons.

Anti-seize maybe, but not really needed. You want the friction to be maintained to hold on to your wheels....

Over-torquing causes stuck on bolts...

How do you remove the caliper and pads though... Can I just go wild with this state too?

Firstly, I just get a rust remover and spray a coat of paint over the pin. Then I can bend it and pull it out?

On the last sentence, what do you mean by spraying paint on the rotor?
