The fans

I'm going to seafoam my car today, and i checked out the engine bay and looked at the fans.
They aren't spinning

When do they turn on? I would think that it would turn on when the engine is on to cool the temp in the engine bay. they're electrical fans.

Fans would run when it is required. So it might run and stop when it cools enough and vice versa.
don't worry

oh alright, i got worried there, now to take apart the intake.. x_x'

hmmmm wouldn't it be better to have it running all the time, in the case you have a short ram intake and need that cooler air lol.

just a thought. something like computers? on all the time.

the fans aren't to cool the engine bay, it's to draw air through your radiator to cool your coolant and works via thermostat...i think (about the thermostat)

edit:: just seafoamed and sprayed deep creep down pcv valve hole. and whoops, after i ran around the neighborhood smoking it up........i accidently run over the can of seafoam x_x'

The fans only turn on as needed. IE: When the engine reaches a certain temp.

Theres sensor(s) on the engine that determine when the fans turn on.

The fans do not work off the thermostat.

Thermostat opens when the engine/coolant reaches a certain temp (determined by thermostat) and allows coolant to circulate through the engine.

The fans do not work off the thermostat.

Thermostat opens when the engine/coolant reaches a certain temp (determined by thermostat) and allows coolant to circulate through the engine.

However there are times when the fans will turn on and the thermostat open at the same time. As the warm coolant runs through the radiator the fans will turn on to cool this coolant so it can circulate through the engine to dissipate heat.

wait a sec.........i was just thinking....

do hybrids have much less heat since they're half electric? i was thinking since gas uses fuel combustion, gas exploding and all, it wouldn't be as bad since its a hybrid electric.
Electric stuff don't produce that much heat, i don't think? something like my computer?

cooler engine=more dense air coming in?

Your fan will also come on when you turn on your AC. The sensor is usually set to around +-210F for it to kick in.

A cooler engine will not necessarily result in more power from higher density air. Each engine had its optimal engine running temp so although a cold engine may bring in slightly higher density air, your power gains will more than likey be offset by higher amounts of internal friction due to the lower temps.

do hybrids operate at a lower temperature though?

the temp that they aperate at is really set by the thermostat. anywhere between like 180 and 220 or so. just depends on what you want it to be and waht performance gains you can get from lower or higher temps. I cant see that the hybrids would operate at lower temps when the gas engine is running. if it were to run for an extended period of time it is going to heat up just like any other internal combustion engine.

You know that makes me wonder what is the long term longevity of the gas engine used in the hybrids. If it is going to be cycling off and on is it going to be harder on the engine over the long haul. Talk about stop and go running.
