Gen5 VVT-i Question

Sorry if this has been asked before but what does VVT-i do in performance of a Gen 5 Camry?
I used to have a bone stock ugly 4cyl engine 2003 Dodge Stratus and it was the same speed as my Camry to me. I wonder does that make it faster or something or for miles per gallon or whatnot. Fill me in with your answers please.

It is not the same as Honda VTEC. VTEC has 2 or more cam profiles that control timing and lift. VVTi has only one cam profile and cannot control lift. It can only advance the timing and does not have the same gains as VTEC. VVTi is continuously variable and can be set to any ammount between 0 and the maximum setting where VTEC only has 2 or 3 stages. VTEC has much higher gains than VVTi.

VVTi is used to generate more power, save fuel, and reduce emmissions.

Cliffnote on what touringcamry said: Basically, it's a computer controlled engine that helps you save gas, raise mpg, and helps you gain most of the power needed when you need it at a certain time.

VTEC already controls lift, but cannot advance the timing like VVTi.

VVTL-i and iVTEC pretty much do the same thing, but differently. They both have 2 different cam profiles that can change the duraction of the opening and control lift of the valves. They are also able to control the timing of the vavles.
