power loss from no OD? now HOPEFULLY cleared up for all to understand

'93 3vz-fe auto

Sometimes for fun ill take my car out of OD, the thing is i swear ther is power loss. Especially if u floor it, like there's lag when u turn it off....most times when i turn it back on my RPM will very rapidly gain about 150-200 RPM, especially on an up-hill.....anyone else run into this problem before??

thats interesting... i guess for me if OD is of..because it goes down a gear, feels more powerful as the engine reeves up a bit...lol...closes thing to a manual for me--the feeling.

the only time i feel a lag in that mode is when going down the hill....

^^try going up a hill with OD OFF AND ETC on @steady RPM, turn on OD in the middle of the hill, the ETC should keep it in the same gear....notice any RPM jump??

i mean the RPM jump will be on the same gear, if u were cruisin in 3rd with od OFF and turn od back on, it will stay in third but jump up a couple 100 RPM w/o pressing the throttle any further

So why is it a problem? When you turn your OD off, your RPMs jump... that is what it is meant to do. When OD is off, it will not go past 3rd gear, because its made not to. So naturally, if you turn OD off while in 3rd, it will stay in 3rd. I still don't understand what the problem is.

I'm not gonna read the responses, just post my own.

Normal driving conditions the O/D light on the dashboard should NOT illuminate. Means you will use/are in 4th gear. When you click the O/D button and the O/D light on the dashboard illuminates (right under PRND21), it does not make use of 4th gear, and will only use gear 1, 2, and 3. So when the O/D light on the dashboard is illuminates, and you are on the highway, it will be in 3rd gear, and hence make more RPM's because of the gear ratio.

If that is not what is happening, get a new Tranny.......

When you turn the O/D off it is like going ahalf aof a gear down and it is amde to give you more low end torqe at low speeds. When you said that you flored it with it off instead of having lag it should make you burn more rubber. Maybe your engine needs a tune up.

yes, when OD is OFF, i feel more lag......let me re-re-explain easy way

Drving conditions:

1. OD on ECT off: drives normal

2. OD on ECT on: higher RPM most power overall

3. OD off ECT off: some lag not as good response

4. OD off ECT on: slight more power from higher rpm but still lag

Now, say im driving in condition number 4 up a hill @STEADY RPM. The INSTANT i turn OD back ON, to condition #2, i GAIN about 150-200 RPM and Better throttle response

It did this on my old engine and now many 2200 mi. PP's mod'd etc. engine.
