Got a Turbo'd cam?

I kno ther are a few of u on TN with turbo'd cams...mcE, tony, zoni soon enough etc. Anyway....i dont recall who has what engine turbo'd but im more specifically lookin for the 3vz-fe. Im gathering parts for my setup i only have one drawback....the piping , i cant weld nor do i have the money and time to get one and learn. I figured since a couple of you have done it and know the layouts for the piping on the 3vz-fe you could make them in ur spare time for Xtra $$. Currently i have an xtra ct-26 lying around doing nothing from one of our other supras and all of its accessories. It would be numerous months down the road when i would want them due to money and time reasons but im just trying to get a feel if anyone would be interested in the job???

I could help out, but the piping for my turbo is a lot larger than the piping for a ct26 would be.

www.mcmastercarr.com is where i got all of my piping from and i bought a small welder to get everything together. DIY is the best route here.

^ I agree.

Welding is not that hard to learn. I took a welding class in college.

Check with your local community college and see if they offer a welding class.

For welding thin wall pipe, you can use a mig welder. And mig welding is easy to learn.

I prefer tig for cleaner and nicer looking welds, but it requires more skill.

what i would like to do is for now stick w/ct26 but upgrade to larger l8r, the larger pipes wouldnt be a problem cuz u can simply buy a reducer for now and cut it off l8r , ill check into WVU, where i go, and see if they have a welding class or sumthin...

how much would a small welder cost????

^ A little 110V mig welder will cost about $400 - $600 brand new.

That includes the welder, gun, cable, liner, and regulator (for gas hookup). IOW a complete welder.

Some brands to look into are Lincoln Electric, Miller, Hobart, and ESAB. I like the Lincoln Electric and Miller welders.

Other then that you need a spool of wire (ER70S2 if your going to be welding mild steel), welding gloves, welding mask/helmet, extra tips for the gun, and maybe some leathers.

Edit: Welding mask/helmet can get expensive. Especially if you get a auto darkening one.

I have a Huntsman auto darkening lense. The lense and the helmet together was close to $300.

But once you use one, you won't go back to a regular helmet.

too pricey for my taste, especially just for this particular job that will set me back a pretty $.01....

id rather cut the peices then have someone weld it for some $$, i dont have enough use for a welder to spend that

If you'd rather go the cheaper route, craftsman welders are about 200 bucks, and home depot carries auto dimming helmets for 100.

If you want a damn good weld, go with a tig welder and get some stainless steel wire. Then you dont have to worry about rust if you have stainless steel piping.

Does the welder use flux core wire or solid wire + gas? IOW does it have a gas hookup?

I don't like flux core, to much splatter and residue. Solid wire with C25 (75% argon, 25% co2) is the way to go or you can use straight co2.

And if your welding stainless use tri-mix (argon, co2, helium).

The filler rod / wire depends on what your welding. It should be the same as what your welding.

IE:

Stainless --> stainless rod of equivilant or higher grade.

Aluminum --> aluminum rod of equivilant or higher grade.

Mild steel ---> ER70S2.

Stainless still rusts, altough it does take longer and holds up a lot better then steel.

Stainless, stains less.

ill def look into these 'cheap' welding systems, but it all depends on financials a little down the road, if not somebody can still help me out with measurements and approx angles for layout of the piping to make it a bit easier l8r on, stuff like that, maybe some more detailed pictures of the layout of ur turbo'd setup?

^ Every setup is different though. Which is why you need to get everything installed first, then make up the piping.

What I do is buy a bunch of different mandral bent pipe and cut it up to get the pieces I need.

Tack weld the pieces together and make sure that they'll work in the car. If you mess up its easier to grind out a tack weld then an entire weld.

Then weld it all together.

A metal cutoff saw works really good for cutting the pipe and its what I use.

If you pay a shop to do your piping, thats what their going to do anyways. So if you know how to weld and fabricate, might as well do it yourself and save some money.
