4th Generation Auto shifter very tight

My mother just bought a 99 camry, 2.2L auto. I looked it over, and the shifter is very tight. I was hoping someone has experienced this before, or at least, you guys could give a brief decription of how to get at the shfter.

Cool; another Vermonter

We also have a 99' 4-cylinder auto though we haven't had the problem. When you mean it's "tight", do you mean it's hard to move the lever at all, even after pressing the brake pedal and pushing in the button on the shifter? If so, the last owner could have spilled soda or something sticky around it, and it could have gone into the mechanical parts underneath the lever. I've heard of things like that happening.

Yes, exactly. I'm pretty sure I can fix it if I knew how to get the console apart.

It also doesn't lock in drive, you can put it in N from D without puching the button. But I suspect it's designed that way (still don't like it).

This thread might help with instructions on how to get to the shifter.
