Gen5 Drum-to-Disc Conversion Question

How much does it cost to do a drum-to-disc conversion? I'm wondering how expensive it is... not sure if its really worth it or not. Will I get a lot more breaking power from having discs in the back as opposed to drums? Thanks.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.

They make them for the Gen5, it's just not listed. I used to work there

The retail is 2,095.00 but I can get TN members 10% off. So figure 1895.00 If anyone is seriously interested PM me and I'll see if I can do any better.

But to answer your original ? Do a search on "Drum Swap" or "Disc Conversion" And filter it to only the Camry section and you'll see a ton of threads on this topic.

Oh you're talking about big brake conversion? haha.. yeah, I don't think I'll do that for a while... I've got other plans on where to drop money first... I was just going to upgrade my brakes and get slotted/drilled rotors, and maybe do a rear disc conversion, and paint my calipers red... but at this point, since you say its not worth it to do a disc conversion (and i'll go do a search about it too), I'll probably just change the fronts and paint the calipers.

You need a few things to do this. The rear disk assembly (rotors, shoes, and hardware). Then you need the brake cable. This shouldnt run you too much money if you go to the right spot. Around here we have Pull-a-part where you go and take parts off of salvage cars yourself for a low low price. For both sides I paid $60 plus another $15 for the brake cable. Besure to keep all little pieces because it is nearly impossible to find them anywhere else but the dealer ($$$$) or a salvage yard. All in all you shouldnt spend more than $100 for these parts. Chances are everything will be in great working order and you dont need to spend any more money on incidentals like turning the rotors or buying new pads and shoes.
Also, be sure to readup on the process (how-to's and your haynes manual). this will save you time and guess work.

Someone did a writeup on a gen 4/4.5 awhile back. I had considered it but ruled it out because I use my car as a DD and its only a 4banger.

I think his parts ran 500-1000 from the junk yard (I think that figure had a built in snafu in case you messed up).

Honestly, a good set of brembo blanks with Hawk HP+ or HPS pads will be more than sufficient for us DD guys--I'm assuming you aren't building a track car right?

Throw some high quality ceramics on the back and you'll be set

2k just aint worth it unless its for show or go.

Nah, I'm not building a track car... alright then! Thanks for your input. Guess I'll just get some good front rotors and ceramic pads, and get some upscale rear drums, and be happy. Haha. Maybe in the future, I'll get a big brake kit for the fronts...

Are you front pads wearing out anytime soon? Are the rotors warped? I wouldn't change anything til you need to. If anything, you can get a more agreesive pad and use your stock rotors, which if they aren't warped, then they're good quality. Might be a good idea to have them resurfaced just enugh to take off the top layer.

There's no such thing as a Drum upgrade Stock is fine.
