strange whistling sound

There's a strange whistling noise (more so than a humming) that can only really be heard when I'm cruising between 60-80mph. It's coming from the engine bay and doesn't change pitch if I drop from O/D to 3rd so it's not a part that changes speed with the revs. If you let go of the accelerator, it goes away and returns when you even press the pedal lightly. The only time it changes pitch is when the car goes faster although past 90mph, you can't hear it much. It can't be anything to do with the fuel system because I have dual fuel LPG/petrol and it does it with both. Definately not something stupid like speaker hum from an amp because checked that first.

Although most people can't hear it, you know what it's like when your car makes a strange noise that no-one else hears, you're constantly listening out for it. Any ideas?

Just throwing a suggestion out there but maybe tire hum. Just a thought.

No, not tyre hum. Definately from engine bay. It's not bearings either as they sound a bit different. I'm one of those people that can hear the slightest sound that no-one else can hear. The whistling is only really noticeable at crusing speed as the pitch is just right. If you go much faster, it tends to get higher pitched and less audible. Gotta be something that rotates in the engine somewhere. Never taken the engine apart though so got me stumped.

My stock air box would make a little whistling sound under heavy loads. Like cruising at a high speed or hard acceleration. Maybe that's what you're hearing?

USA Exactly the same, but differnt!

I have a similar problem with my 2003 Rav4. Just recently I had started to hear a hum, not a whistle, a hum that gradually gets louder, then stops altogether. It doesn't happen every day, or while driving at speeds under 60. It's not the tire, that's been checked. it's definietly coming from the front right of the car and the first time I heard it I thought a helicopter was flying right over me.
