Is This Supposed To Happen??

I have a 93 Camry. The other day I had the car running because I heard engine noises coming from under the hood. I unscrewed the oil filler cap with the engine running and it stalled. Is that supposed to happen??

if you said you heard strange noises coming from the engine im sure it caused the stall, and not because you removed the oil fill cap. what sort of noises did you hear and from where?

Check to see if any vacuum hoses are disconnected.

I heard noises coming form what seemed to be the valvetrain. The engine was making a ticking noise. Not severe, but enough for me to notice. Just out of curiousity I took off the oil filler cap and the car stalled out. I did this before on my Truck and it never stalled. Other than the ticking noise the car runs ok. No oil came out either. But everytime I take the oil cap off it stalls. I thought maybe Toyota has a protection device so that if you forget to put the cap back on it prevents you from being able to run the car, to protect the engine. I don't know.

Camrylvr, I read this and tried it on my 93 camry 3vz-fe and after a few seconds with the cap off the RPMs at idle began going up and down. Tthe motor began to lose it's RPMs pretty bad after about 7 secs w/out the cap on. Kinda wondering if the engine loses pressure or something with the cap maybe. Anyway, the second I put the cap on the RPMs went back to normal.

Yeah... Thats exactly what happened to my Camry. I thought something was wrong though. I was just reading various topics about the seafoam stuff. I'm new to this website. Nice to meet you Hobo Joe, Your 16 right?? Anyway I really want to try it. The crankase and gas application seem easy, but I'm hesitating on the application via brake booster. Although I have no engine problems. Im nervous I will screw something up. Up until today, I've never heard of Seafoam. Im surprised I haven't Im always in the gas and oil treatment aisles.

Welcome to Tn Camrylvr, I'm fairly new too. Yes I'm 16. I was also nervous about the seafoam in the brake booster line when I did it. It's easy though. Put the seafoam in a glass and let the booster suck the seafoam right up. (not too fast though) I had a friend hold the idle at about 3000rpms. The car will try to stall during the process, but just give it more gas. Oh, and you'll be pouring white smoke out the back end of your car that would even fail a Montana emissions test. After this I took the car for some spirited driving just to be on the safe side. She idles much nicer now.

Sounds good. I'll have to try it after I replace all of the rotors and brakes. What color and how many miles does your camry have on it. Mine is taupe and has 124,000 miles, runs great. Besides the seafoam. Do you do your own work, like your own brakes, oil, spark plugs. ETC. I'm just asking. So in the future we could help eachother with helpful info. Like I haven't done my own tranny change yet. Next week Im going to take off the pan. On our tranny's they have a drain plug. But I still want to drop the pan. Also I researched the seafoam and they have a tranny treatment.

My camry is a plum/silvery color. Just hit 150,000 miles yesterday. As for maintenance I do the basic stuff. Oil, plugs and such. I try to stay away from the tranny and brakes though cause they scare me. Have you done any mods to your camry? I'm bone stock. (For Now)

edit: and helping eachother out in the future would be great!

That's a nice color. Never let that stuff scare you. If you have a Chiltons or Haynes. My choice is I like the Chilton's better. As long as you read and follow the directions you'll never get into trouble. Plus when working on something you never had before your learning new stuff as well. Then the next time you'll be a pro at it. Thats how I learned. You can always ask me something If I know the answer, I'll be glad to help. As for me I'm bone stock as well. How do you change your plugs on the back side near the firewall.

One more thing b4 I head to bed at 5am. I don't know if you clean your engine or not, but after 150,000 miles my engine was quite dirty... believe it or not! lol. Anyway, a few days ago I decided I'ld clean the engine. Obviously I covered the alternator and distributor and went to work. I have nothing but good things to say about Simple Green. My engine looks perty now! Simple Green+pressure washer=damn clean engine!

3rd Generation

Thanks, I won't hesitate to ask about something I'm not sure of. About the plugs in the back:

1. Flexible arm
2.Patience. It took me a long time to do those back plugs.
3.A big ratchet won't fit back there. I used a small one with a decent extension and swivel.
It's a slow process but if you get back there and really try (maybe not really, it's harder for me since my right elbow has arthritis) you'll get those SOBs !!

What's up. I would have responded yesterday morning but I had to go to sleep. My Engine is filthy, I swear by Simple Green. It's great plus it smells awesome. Thats what I use to clean my carpets. Works great on the interior as well. I have not cleaned the engine. Im for some reason terrified to soak the engine with water. The book said you cannot get the timing belt wet!! I really want to clean it though. For the plugs since I started doing my own work for a while. I used to have a mechanic, I brought him the car for plugs and wires. He said the only way to change the back ones is to remove the intake manifold and the throttle body. I assume there is a easier way. Thats the only repair I have not done myself yet. You have arthritis?? at 16?? That must suck!!

Yes, arthritits at 16 does suck. It's not horrible though. In the afternoon is when it usually kicks in. As for washing the engine, just cover the alternator and distributor with aluminum foil. That's what I used. As for the timing belt, I'm not so sure. Is it the one with the plastic cover on it that says 3VZ-FE? If so , oops! It ran fine after the wash though. Ran as good as it looked!
