Well my check engine light came on 2 days ago and my tranny was shifting hard. brought the car to my local mechanic and he checked the error message and told me that the speed sensor needed replacing.
Does anyone know if this is covered by the 5 yr 60k powertrain warranty?

i'd take it back to the dealers anyways since u say your car is 'totally stock', and its probably a 2004? Something like this shouldnt go wrong so fast. in fact i've almost never heard of a speed sensor going out.
diagnostic fee!?!? If the car is warrantied you shouldn't have to pay for the way they figure out whats wrong with your warrantied vehicle; get what I am saying? I'd tell them thats rediculous and to screw off. Perhaps even go to the dealer on the other side of town.
Wouldn't the ABS light come on for a braking issue such as a speed sensor being damaged. Anyways, as far as paying fees, it should be under warranty. I say you get uppity and start asking for managers and if all else fails, harass Toyota directly.
Speed sensors are not usually considered part of the powertrain. Therefore it will most likely not be covered by the 5/60 warranty. Usually the dealer and alot of other mechanics will charge a diagnostic fee so they are covered jsut in case the problem is not covered by any warranty. If it is something that is covered by the warranty then you will usually not be charged the daignostic fee. You dont hve to pay the fee up front anyway. BUt you should know that if they find there is a problem and not covered and you decide not to have the repairs done at the dealer you will be responsible for that fee. However on the other hand if it is not covered by warranty and you do decide to have hte reairs done at the dealer the diagnostic fee will usually be added into the labor. IN other words they are probably charging you .5 hour labor for the fee, if ther repairs call for 2 hours labor sometimes they will only charge you an additional 1.5 hours plus the .5 hour . This is hte way we used to do it when I was working for the Toyota Dealer here in Nashville anyway. I hope that all made sense.

Well i just spoke to one of the mechanics that checked my car at the dealership and they told me that the wiring harness that connects to ECU to the sensor has been chewed up by some animal or rodent!
est. price to fix $336 +tax and labor! WTF! and to boot... they won't be replacing the wiring harness... sounds like to they're just doing a patch job!
SOMEONE HELP! this can't be right!.... is it?

I had something just like this happen to me when my 94 Camry was brand new. Some unknown rodent ate the hood pad, scratched the underside of the hood, ate a large preformed vacuum line leading to the brake booster and ate the wiring to both O2 sensors. The bill was around $500. It was covered under my insurance less my deductible. Check your insurance policy for the amount of your deductible. If it is $100 or $200 on comprehensive, then file a claim. If it is $500 you are on your own. If you do file a claim this will not affect your premiums.
