as you all can tell, im pretty new here. i have a 92 camry with the 3vz-fe and an auto box. i saved the car from the bone yard and really enjoy the car! however, im experiencing a high idle, around 1300-1500rpm at idle in PARK. when i shift to any gear, the idle naturally drops because of the torque stress the trans puts on teh engine. is there any wqay to adjust the idle or are there any common problems linked to t ahigh idle, other than vaccume leaks? i already checked that. any help would be greatly apprecated!
you could change your plugs if you are having rough idle - that might sometimes help because it was causing inconsistent idle on my 5s... also are you running any systems on the car like AC or anything that might stress the motor at stand still

plugs are brand new densos. the wires are also brand new. not really a rough idle at all, just high. like 1300-1500 at idle. a/c doesnt work. its too bad because its the xle model.
Clean the valve that controls the idle with throttle body cleaner. if that doesn't help than there can be a air leak on the intake parts like the throttle body, air intake plenum and the intake manifold. you shoud buy a gasket kit and replace them.
You need to check all vacuum hoses, especially check the one pictured. If it is pulled off you can expect the idle to go to the range you are referring to. Additionally, if all else fails it would benefit you to go ahead and adjust the idle (instructions below).
On the throttle body, at the top where the throttle valve linkage is located you will see a small black screw with a nut on it (nut is on top). You will have to use an allen wrench/key (aka hex key) to make the adjustment. Furthermore you may have to use a small open end wrench to loosen the nut so that the screw can be moved. It would be best if you had a tach hookup so that you could set the idle, that way you will see the idle speed. You Upper radiator hose should be hot when idle is checked or changed. Speed should be set to 700rpms + or - 50rpms. If you don't have a tach just eyeball it the best you can.
Important: The danger in a high idle is found in overheating the transmission!! So have this problem seen about. You really need to get to the bottom of the high idle problem, the idle adjust is a bandaid...Also it would be good to check your ignition timing.
good luck,
-Adam

just FYI, ther is no, "torque stress" on the 3vz-fe from the auto. It will idle the same whether in N or D because the computer will automatically put it in N while @an Idle AND warm
my IAC isnt even connected correctly in the least minuse the coolant hose and i still idle normally
Also, for what Adam said: timing wont affect ur idle much at all once the ECU learns its new environment...dont worry bout that

so that explains why my car rolls forward from engine power when i dont have the foot down and in D -- because the ecu is putting it in IDLE!!!??
yeah tehecu learns that the timign sstill to advanced so itll go pop pop gurgle from the exhaust and sound tough :P

I was merely suggesting that he check his timing...BUT ON THAT NOTE: the ECU can electronically control the advance/retard to a point, and it is there that one must use mechanical advance/retard---like rotating the distributor...I was not relating his high idle to incorrect timing...my suggestion was an aside.

didnt come off that way
as for terra: maybe its just me then when the engine is cold i can go OVER 20mph on a flat surface ....when its warm and flat...nuthin im just special like that
i will check the timing. i thinkn its ok though. but i will also definatly check more in depth than before with the vaccume leaks. there is no hissing though. and if there's no idle adjustment screw i guess the better. i dont want to "rig" the problem, i'd rather fix it correctly.
