Question Please Help...

I hope that someone has an answer for me. I own a 93 Camry LE. Excellent condition. 4 months ago I got the coolant flushed and a 51 point inspection and a spring oil change. I don't know much about cars but I do get general inspections regularly.

This morning I had to add some windshield washer fluid and I noticed that one of my fans had melted. I have two fans and the one on the driver's side seemed to have melted the mount. By the looks of things the 'black motor' has dropped down because of the melted fanwheel. I have no idea what it is or what could have caused this but apparantley it has to be fixed.

Can I fix this at home or should I have to take it to the dealership? What can cause this?

Can I drive my car without it dying or adding problems to my car by driving it? It doesn't make any sounds and it drives great previously. I really don't know what to do. And I'm not sure I want to take it to a toyota dealership since they might rip me off.

Any diagnostics would be helpful!

Much Thanks in Advance

Replacement should be straightforward. But it from the dealer and then put it in. But you have to find out what caused it. Good luck. Are you sure your engine did not overheat?

I talked to the garage today and I have to take it in.

They said it probably had a short in the wiring thus causing the melting. They said that if I need a new fan motor should be about $225. CAD. The fan shroud $143.00 and the fan itself $52.00 so for a grand total of $420.CAD not including installation & taxes.

So needless to say if I was mechanically inclined or knew someone that was I wouldn't have to pay about $600. So I have my fingers crossed that the motor is not burned out.

Oh and the car didn't overheat. I didn't even know there was a problem until I added some wiper fluid. No weird sounds, the air conditioning works fine, no overheating...nothing.

Thanks for your help...

A short circuit does not happen in toyota cars that often. Toyota are not built like. *cough* ford.

Maybe, just maybe the previous mechanic mess something up which cause it so short circuit. This is the first time I heard of a fan melting.

Well I just got back from the mechanic. He had never seen a fan melting either, he said in the 40 years that he has been a mechanic he has never seen anything like it. It cost me $145.00 for the part and $30 in labour. So instead of taking it to a Toyota Dealership and getting them to install it for $600 + I went to my other mechanic and he saved me $450.

According to my mechanic he said that it wasn't a wiring problem as opposed to what Toyota had told me. He said that the fan motor seized thus tearing the fan apart and the melting was because of the fan motor overheating.

My car is back to her perfect condition!

Thanks for the input!
