is there any way to look at the numbers and letters in the VIN to determine model, door number' drivetrain, color, year etc? im very familiar with rx-7's and conquests and there is a way with them, so i was curious if there was a way with my camry.

i've struck out on #4. there is no "V" listed #5 is wrong, i have a 3vz-fe, not a 1nz-fxe. #7 is off, i only have one airbag. in #8, at letter E, it says i have a matrix or corolla. i have a camry. my vin is JT2VK13E0N0105182. im not sure if that check is possible for a later model camry..i have a 92. not sure where they were getting those engine codes. i thought i was pretty savvy with toyota's engine codes. i guess not..wow.
that makes sense why things were messed up. i still am having trouble locating any info on this. im really getting into my toyota and this is something id love to find out!
This is taken from a write up I did in the Supra section, so it's not all useful here, but there are a few links that you might enjoy in it:
In the beginning of the VIN: JT2MA71 = Factory Turbo JT2MA70 = N/A
Now, if you read it off where they stamped it on the firewall, they'll all say MA70, if you read it off the tag at the edge of the dash they'll all be right according to the above.
My 94 has a sticker in the door that lists the color and trim model. It's listed in the bottom corner of the vin sticker. Lists something like CO: TR: or something like that, I'll have to take a picture. The engine model is listed under the hood.

Answers.com is wrong. It gets its info from wikipedia, which is user-edited, and was wrong.
I just changed wikipedia to correct the #5 and #8 VIN positions.
I will check some new vehicles, but I have owned Corollas in every year from 1972 to 1997, skipping several years in between.
*edit: it did not save, but try swapping positions 5 and 8.
