after i got my alignment, i was told that i needed to replace my rack and pinion bushings. i went through the repair manual sticky and couldnt quite find anything on it.
how much money should i be expecting to drop to get this fixed? i asked one shop already, he quoted me 260, parts/labor.
can this job be a diy for someone who isnt quite an experienced diy-er? the most ive done is the rsb in my car... and i kinda helped out my friend install springs in his mr2, but i mostly just watched.
if i cant fix this myself, i dont have the money to fix it. school just started again and my money has been drained. how important are these bushings in keeping the car running decent? will this pull my wheels out of alignment at all? i can already feel the effect on my steering. will something else break if i dont get this fixed?

their easy, they are just rubber fillers that go inside the metal hoseshoe straps that hold the rack to the frame, just take 1 strap off at a time and get the old rubber one off and push the new one around the rack and put the strap back on, then do the other one
you guys are making it sound so easy... it makes me wonder if we're even talking about the same thing here.
i just called the dealer and they dont even sell the bushings, the guy said youd have to replace the entire rack and pinion... which sounded ridiculous even to himself. yet he had no idea why the part was not listed.
autozone doesnt carry the part either.
does anyone have a pic of the bushing and its location on the car, by any chance? (88 le, i know youve got something...)

i just called another parts store thats selling a rack and pinion bushing, but he called it a "rack and pinion MOUNT bushing" and it goes on the right side only. this was the only bushing that came up. and it costs 8 bucks. now im really confused, is this the same thing or no

from what i remember when i changed my rack, is it mounting directly to the frame, and i had to un-do the sway bar just to get to the rack bolts. this all sounds pretty crazy to me too.

yea... thats what i was thinking... but i dont think thats what im looking for. thx tho
the guy at the parts desk at the dealer told me that they didnt even have any of the bushings on the rack listed, and that they would probably need to replace the entire rack. i dont think i wanna do that though.
what kind of shit can i get myself into if i dont replace these bushings?
and does 260 for the whole job sound reasonable...

i read in a past thread that if you turn hard towards either direction, then the steering wheel will lean towards that direction, until you turn hard in the other direction, in which it will switch. this is what ive been getting lately.
crap.
