Camry scrapes ground

When my 1998 Camry has 3 or 4 people or a lot of items in the trunk and I go over small bumps in the road, I can hear a scraping sound. It sounds like something on the bottom is scraping on the ground. Do you know what might be causing this?

Thanks

drive slower.

yorue probably either scraping
1 mudflaps
2 last bend inthe exhaust pipe
3 chassis rails.

thats if youre hitting the ground

you might be scraping inner guards or struts.

I took it into a shop and they're telling me both rear struts need to be replaced and it will cost about $568 do that and the alignment. Does that sound reasonable?

nope.

for stock struts, should cost about $150 MAX and then 100bucks for labor
just a rear alignment should also cost you less than 50bucks.

so MAX a total of $300....time to start looking for a mechanic you can trust

Sounds like the exhaust (the last bend as terrastrife said).

Mine does it every now and then... I'm lowered and you're stock though.

The Gen 4 Camry's were notorious for this when they first hit the market. Even new they would drag the exhaust and we evenhad some people come in that had ripped the entire exhaust off on their brand new car. Now that you ahve some age on it the struts are done and need to be replaced to get it back to factory specs. The price you were quoted seems awfully high. I would look around at some different shops and compare prices or see what you can do it your self for.

Yeah its the bend in the muffler pipe mostlikely. And for a 98 camry, its time to get the struts replaced. If i had extra money i would have done the springs too, because just doing struts doesnt help too much when weight is applied. It just has better cornering and overall handling with two peple in the car. With the car packed, its still riding REAL low in the back and i have to go over bumpy roads and speedbumps SLOWLY.

But tahts a tad expensive just fbor the rears. I got 4 ceramic brake pads, disc resurfacing, and 4 brand new (i dont know the brand) struts put in for about 1000 bucks. Woulda probably cost me 2/3 of that if i did it myself.

i doubt that it is the struts that needs to be replaced if the car bottoms out.
I would look at the springs.
anyway, just a FYI

KYB struts are about $250-280 for parts (that is for the front and back).

Good Springs run from $130-$180
Tein
KYB
Eibach

I would get a second opinion

i am also on ebay
I have been looking for some springs, struts and strut mount.
The prices I listed earlier are for gen4 and 4.5. Maybe it's cheaper for gen 4.5

i.e. tein springs are about $130 + shipping. more or less $170 shipped.
KYB GR2 are about $240-260 + shipping.

I have been looking at those for a long time but deciding between lowering car, struts, mounts and alignment vs 3 weeks trip overseas. Just got a job so money is kind of tight.

It pays to have a gen 4.5 but will trade with ur gen 5.
