5S-FE - remove engine only? (without trans?)

Car:

1995 Camry LE sedan with 5S-FE 4 cylinder and Auto trans - build date 6/95.

Problem:

Original engine is SHOT. Internal coolant leak and knocking rod bearings.

Solution:

I've found a 5S-FE engine from a 1992 with only 54k miles.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, now I've begun to remove the original engine, but I've run into an issue. I'm following the instructions in the service manual (online manual info was 'pinned' at the top of this forum). I see that my next step (according to the manual) is to go underneath and remove the axles. I wasn't expecting this.

Here's my question. Is it possible to remove only the engine without removing the transaxle? Or must the engine and transaxle come out as a unit?

thanks

Doug

PS: Are there any other known issues in doing this swap (incompatibilites?)?

wow sounds so familiar .. to my situation that is. I Wish ya luck on this project.. but be careful. My motor just blew with the same problem.. which would make it the second time I have spun a bearing. I put a low milage motor in...so be careful..anways back to your question you would have to remove the transaxle as well.. I hope your doing this in a shop where there is a lift. AND a problem I had with my second motor after it was in was with the oil pan. Damn POS kept leaking.. and that took forever to figure out how to stop it. good luck, I give ya props

I talked to the salvage yard when I picked up the '92 engine this morning. They assured me that the engine can be removed, while leaving the trans in place. Can someone verify this?

I seems to me that I should be able to remove the access panel on the bottom of the trans, then remove bolts that secure to 'flywheel' to the the trans torque converter. Sound right? Will this allow the engine to 'clear' the trans as the engine is lifted?

thanks in advance for your responses.

You have two choices. you can remove everything connected to the transmission (CV axle, plus, mount and cables) and pull it out while its still bolted to the engine. This means that you will latch the engine hoist so the that left side of the engine comes out first. Not my first choice. Or you can do it the good old fashion way by disconnecting everything from the tranny AND disconnecting the tranny from the engine too. By disconnecting the CV axles you will allow the tranny to room to move so you can take it off the engine and slde it off to the side and you remove the engine. You wont have that much space but just enuff to give the enige clearance. Good luck. I'll be doing the same next weekend (rear main seal)

Reaper...

So you're saying that either way, I'll need to remove both axles. I agree that leaving the (disconnected) tranny in place (slid to the right) would be easiest.

thanks

if that engine has been sitting awhile id pull it apart and inspect the bearings and what not i just went through a nightmare to fix my car. As for pulling the engine without the trans you need to get the flexplate or flwheel/clutch out of the bell housing to hoist up so if its auto id say you need to be able to pull the engine 2" to the pass side to pull it straight out and maybe 3- 3.5" for a manual transmission

OK this is sounding better... maybe I can shift the engine. I really don't want to pull the trans. Keep 'em coming folks.

BTW, the car was running up to about 1 mnth ago.

the easiest way to do it is to remove the 6 or 8 Allen head bolts that join the passenger side inner axle to the outer axle. either way you have to remove the drivers side axle from the tranny. as you might have guessed this will leak fluid out from where the axle goes in...

ive removed 3 or 4 camry engines now and tried a few different ways... this is the easiest. its a lot easier to disconnect and connect the tranny from the engine while the whole unit together is out of the car... this is what all the repair manuals say to do, and what you should do.
