what exactly does the overdrive button do? i know it takes away 4th gear. but what would be the advamntage of that? my friend told me the rpms kick up fatser i tested it and the acceleraction seemed better, was this just my imagination.?
The O/D button allows you to prevent the 4th gear (overdrive gear) to engage. I also notice on camry that with the O/D off, it holds the rpm until redline before it shifts to the next gear. With the O/D on it shifts a lot earlier.

i find it particularly useful for slowing the car down or maintaining speed down a slope. Good for driving on snow etc, where you want some engine braking to prevent wheel lock.
umm.... this might sound weird... but is there some kind of display on ur dash which will tell u whether O/D is activated or not???? coz i dun have one... and i never know whether it is switched on or off?

actually , overdrive should only be used on the freeway. Its there to save you gas mileage. When you take it off in the city, this helps your tranny from over working itself, so it doesnt have to shift thru 4 gears to get up to speed. Its basically making it not shift as much . You dont need to shift into fourth gear when your in the city because you aint going fast enough to be in fourth.
-O/D on means you can go to 4th gear...
-O/D off means 3rd gear will be ur highest
-if O/D is off then your gears will change at a higher rpm
are you sure that the car then changes gears at higher rpms?
turning off o/d should keep everything exactly the same except that 3rd is the highest you can go, and the tach will just keep on rising the faster you go in 3rd cuz there's no 4th to go to...
now, the power button will make everything change gears at higher revs....it's the easiest way to redline....

so using the o/d button to "gear down" from highway speeds is OK ? ans so is leaving it in 3rd gear in the city ? is it bad for a slushbox to be in a higher RPM band for a long period of time ? putting it into 4th would give it a rest right ?
