2nd Generation Tachometer Installation...

Hello guys, I have a 2nd gen. 1990 Camry 4cyl. It did't come with a tachometer so I bought one. It's called a Sunpro sun super tach II. Has anyone here installed one in their Camry? Where should I connect the green wire for the tach? Can anyone show me how to install it with pictures? Thanks for the help...

The tach wire can be found in several different places.

1. One of the plugs that plugs into the back of the gauge cluster.

2. Black wire on ignitor. The ignitor is next to the battery, on the left side.

3. Check connector on top of distributor.

Wiring diagrams for guage cluster. Tach wire is labeled:

Black = ground

Red = switched +12V source (ie: ignition)

White = wire to parking light wire

Green = tach wire

Parking light wire can be found on a plug behind the guage cluster.

^ Green wire (2nd from left) in the plug above.

Ignition can be found at the harness at the bottom of the steering column. Its a black wire with yellow stripe.

The tach wire is on one of the plugs behind the gauge cluster. Its at the same place you would find the parking light wire.

Theres 3 plugs that plug into the back of the gauge cluster. Just look for a black wire on a 8 pin plug.

How you route the wires depends on where you mount the tach. You know where the wires need to go, so route the wires from the tach to wherever they need to go.

This applies to a gauge cluster without a tach right?

^ Yes.

The gauge cluster wiring is the same, regardless if your gauge cluster has a tach or not.

Thats why you can get a stock gauge cluster that has a tach, plug it in, and it'll work.

My new tachometer is so awesome! I can't stop looking at the needle go up and down. It looks so clean and cool. Finally, my car has a tach. Thanks everyone, specially 88 LE.
