2nd Generation replacing cigarette lighter

Hope someone can help. I need to replace the cigarette lighter in my 89 camry. The current one doesn't work and the previous owner left a new one in the car when I bought it, un-installed. What color should the original power wire be? What it the best way to remove the trim panel surrounding the stereo, heater controls, cig lighter etc? There are two screws at the top of the panel but I don't see any other fasteners. The lighter doesn't stay depressed in the socket and I can't get a good read on the contact points to see if any juice is flowing. I think it must be dead.Any help would be appreciated!!!!

The black trim piece should just come off if you pull it off straight with a little force. As for the lighter, i had the same problem, but i was able to fix it using a multimeter and finding where the contact points are not connecting. Make sure your fuse is okay, and you're getting power through the female connector in the dash. Then try slightly bending the main prong on the cigarette lighter assembly, and checking with a multimeter to find out if you're getting power in the socket.

Check your fuses, power is red, black is ground, unclip and unscrew to remove the dash panel. Should be EASY!

^ Wrong.

Power = blue with red stripe

Ground = white with black stripe

To remove the trim panel:

1. Remove the 2 screws underneath the top of the panel.

2. Remove the cig lighter and ash try.

3. Pull on trim panel and it'll pop off. Its held on with several clips.

I had the same problem with mine. Do this:
-remove the facia panel
-behind where you insert the cigarette lighter is a silver cylinder
-unscrew the bottom of the cylinder
-now on the inside the will be two pieces of metal which form to make a clip
-press these two clips together to tighten them
-now try putting in the cigarette lighter it should now stick (you may have to loosen or tighten the clips depending on whether it fits or not)
-what you have done is tighten the clips which hold the cigarette lighter in position while it heats up

if this is unclear I will take a photo but pull it apart and try it first, it worked for me
