My brother has a 97 camery with a 2.2 liter engine and the water pump locked up on it and messed up the timing belt and jumped time. My question is, are these engines interference engines and how common is it for them to bend valves? I was under the impression that they are not. But as I was changing the belt and setting the timing on it I was turning the engine by hand with a socket on the crankshaft and it felt like the pistons were hitting the valves, which would mean that it is an interference engine. But I wasnt sure so I thought I would get on here and ask cause my brother said that he tried cranking after it messed up and it turned over fine, so I am a little stumped lol... Thanks for any help.
The 97 Camry (no e) 2.2L is a non-interference engine. Most Toyota engines with timing belts are non-interence engine. Those with timing chains are usually interference.
hmmm... when I tried to spin the engine by hand (with the belt off) it felt like the pistons were hittin the valves... somthing was definately in the way there and not letting the pistons go any more. I had the cam spocket with the timing mark (hole) at the top parallel to the head, and I was tryin to get the #1 cyl to TDC but it wouldnt spin all the way through. I was thinking that there was a bent valve, but if it is a non-interference engine then the valves should not be bent...
P.S. I had another question and I thought I would jsut post on here instead of making a whole other thread... I have a 1990 celica GT with a 2.2L in it, would the turbo manifold off of turbo MR2 or celica fit on that engine? I am thinking no, but i'm not for sure so I thought I would go on and ask.
I did... its not the compression thats makin it hard to spin it (come on now, I aint that weak lol)... it feels like its accually hittin a valve, it jsut comes to a dead stop when you get to a certain point.
I have heard of a person who messed something up because the timing belt broke while the engine was spinning at something like 6k RPM, so it's certainly possible.

Actually fitting the motor? Yes. Clearance issues? Possibley.
Anyone think otherwise?

hmmmm. well I if it is a non-interference engine you could have a piston at TDC and the valves all the way open and they wont touch, and if it is an interference engine that they will. I was thinkin that it was a noninterference engine so thats where I was really stumped lol.
