2nd Generation timing belt replacement costs

my '90 cam has been bothering me lately, it seems as if the engine is getting slower on the low end, and the idle is soundin kinda rough at times.... the engine even sounds rough when revving at est 2000-4000 rpm, it just doesent sound even, i figure these might be due to play in the timingbelt, i checked the milage of when the last time the timing belt was replaced, it says timing belt replaced at 89000 miles.. my engine now has 247000 on it, and 47000 of them have been really really hard miles (racing) ..... i took my camry in to have the timingbelt replaced (sinse i dont have the tools to do it myself) and they said that it would cost me 450.00!!!!!! is that a normal average price to charge for that type of job!? if so i might as well get the tools and do it myself!!!!

TBs for a 4 cylinder maybe. $400 for a V6 would be considered cheap.

my local toyota dealership does 4cyl timing belts for $189 and 6cyl cars for $239. as others have said its probably wise to spend the extra few bucks on the water pump as well.

I have had all my timing belts done at the dealership since they use toyota belts and i have always got my car back the same day.

yeah those prices are pretty much standard at any dealer probably. hell we were only charging like 169 or so when I was doing it and that was almost ten years ago. For 450 they better be doing the belt, water pump and seals at least. Maybe even the tensioner and idler.

i've had mine done at a local mech that i trust for only 350$ but then i had then put in new water pump, coolant flush, timing belt tensioner, idler bearing replaced, crank seal, oil pump seal and oring.... so 450$ is way too high for just timing belt
