kind of a general question, i know. i was reading through my owner's manual and it says "Welcome to the growing groupof value conscious people who drive Toyotas. We are proud of the advanced engineering and quality construction of each vehicle we build". now i dont know about you, but to me, that sounds pretty accurate. i guess im not a "vaule conscious" person of sorts, because if you drive a Toyota, you will pay to maintain it and it will give you many many years of use and enjoyment. i have just developed a bond with my Toyota, much like that of my RX-7's. so, i was wondering why all you you guys drive a Toyota Camry.
I drive it because I used to work on them and I know how well they are built. Also I got it with less than 65k miles on it and paid 3500 for it. Also everyone talks about how much you will spend to maintain it and all. Does everyone think that since there is a Toyota emblem on the front they are more expensive to maintain. I am sure if you start comparing prices on normal maintenance items you will find that the parts for most any car nowadays is going to be about the same. Every car starts to cost more as it gets older so that is not a jsutifiable excuse.
I know it isnt a Camry but I had a 97 Corolla and guess what. ALl I did to it was replace the timing belt once, the brakes twice, put four sets of tires on it, an dreplaced the air filter a couple of times oh yeah I replaced the batter once. the oil was changed somewhere inthe neighborhood of every 6-8k miles. My wife said she never had the time to do it, so she said. It had the origianl spark plugs, cap rotor, wires, and transmission fluid in it as the day I drove it off the lot new. I never had to add freon. and it still got over 30mpg when I traded it for my Sienna. NOw I dont see how that car was expensive to maintain. Oh and it had 175k miles on it when I traded it in and we put everyone of the miles on it.

i guess they're only expensive to maintain if the maitenence is behind and stuff is all in shambles due to neglect. my camry is the most reliable vehicle in my fleet. next to my ranger. but i maintain what i have and mostly use oem parts. i saved the camry from the boneyard and trust me, it was on its last leg until i put my hands to work. now its being driven over 250 miles a week and i couldnt be happier with it.
My parents bought it for me used in 1998. I wanted an accord or civic (mind you that at this point, hondas were the hottest shit) and I wanted in stick. NO DICE. At that point Hondas were waaaay too expensive for being used.
So I had no choice and I got the camry. At first, i was totally bummed. I hated it and I wanted to sell it and get a honda. Over the first few months I scrapped up little here and little there and started doing stuff. I never bought the camry because it was "reliable" or "retained it value". I got it because I had to drive it and i wanted to mod it up. Almost 7 years later, I come to appriciate what my parents bought me.
Value? Nah. Reliable? Sure, why not? Making it look good? HELL FUCK'N YEAH.

It seems like absoutely everything breaks and I spend half my life as a slave to fixing the things I own
I like the value as well and I love the smooth QUIET ride (I upgraded from a 1995 camry to a 2005 camry)
Owning the Camry is like dating a fat girl
She will give you a ride anytime you want
She requires very little attention to keep her happy
She is light on the wallet
You can ignore her and she will still be there when you need her
Because I know how to recognize a beautiful thing I'm with Yukio on this one... I originally picked out my car, but it was my dad's for 2 years before I got it... I love the car... its got a smooth as hell ride, nice and roomy, and looks clean... but those aren't the reasons that I love it. How many parts are there for our Camry's? Maybe 5 or 6 parts of the Gen 5 specifically that are aftermarket... the rest has to be custom fitted. I love it... CUSTOM!

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
My parents bought it for me after I totaled my 96 Avalon. I wanted an accord coupe at that time, but my parents only trust toyota. Just like Yukio, I didn't like it at first, and thing get better after I start modding it.
i definitely wanted something else, like an MP5 or 97 Prelude, hell even a Civic SI. but i liked it more once i found some mods i could do. although i still like my car, i think id be much happier with a different one...one with big aftermarket support!
at the point when i got the camry, i was under time pressure (long story) and had to get a car over a period of 2 days. initially, i wanted an accord for aftermarket parts but i got a bitchin' deal on my camry.
my folks intially wanted the camry for safety and reliability. i don't regret getting it all except i wish it was easier to modify.

thats seems true on not being too much of an aftermarket. however there is something to be said about doing something yourself and taking pride in what you've accomplished. especially when it works the way you wanted it to. makes you appreciate your car a lot more i think. but sometimes it would be eaiser to have a better aftermarket.
