When i got my car @6400 miles i got roughly 31 MPG Highway. Now im getting around 18 MPG. And when i dont use my sound system i get about 20 MPG. I replaced the stock air filter with a New K&N High Flow washable air filter. And got a oil change.
I dont understand why im getting such bad MPG. I had my car on next to a church when it was on fire. But i replaced the filter. Is there anything else i should look at that affects the MPG? I currently have 25,000 miles and i made sure my tires are filled as much as possible (44psi).
I do have 2 Subwoofers and 2 Amps, that total about 140 lbs. I dont have any exsessive weight on the car.
Well first of all, having your tires at the max is a bad idea... its 32 psi recommended, 44 psi max for most tires... you should be in the 32 range, not 44...
Other than that, check your fuel filter and your fuel injectors.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
Its too early to pull out the spark plugs in my car, i changed the oil, the oil filter, the air filter, all the fluids topped off. What else is there for me to do for a tune up? The 140lbs isnt the problem either, even without the weight its about the same MPG.
i only have 25K and this problem has been going on scince last winter.
I say double check the tire pressure again, during my break in period of my 05 camry se, I was haveing horrible gas mileage but thats normal during the break in period, after 10K the car was broken in but mileage was still kind of bad. I nevered checked my tire pressure since I got it from the dealer, and what you know, all four tires has different tire pressure, since my camry was a SE with 16" wheels the psi was 29/29. But generally 32psi is alrite. So I guess try that out before doing anything major, Do you use premium gas?

I have a 93 camry, w/ 145k mi and was experiencing a loss in MPG. was averaging about 25mpg, then i decided to replace my fuel filter and clean the throttle body. a definite help w/ an average of 30mpg now. also changing your oil every 3k and air filter every 8k w/ ensure better fuel efficiency
if you want to do some basic tuneup.
1) spark plugs (search.. denso and NGK, no Bosch)
2) ignition cables
3) air filters
4) clean throttle body
5) seafoam (3 components - do a search)
6) fuel filter
7) oil change, oil filter
8) air pressure check. follow instuctions in manual or car door.
9) get a tune up, i.e. timming, etc
10) ease off the gad pedal (if you have a lead foot)
well, i think one of the reason may be the way you drive. i drive a gen5 I4 le, now it's bout 48k miles, and i had similar mpg when i accelerated my car hard off the line and also if too many overdrive occurs. if thats the way you drive, then i'd suggest you to go easy on the gas pedal. also, from my personal experience, i noticed a minor gain in mpg after i switched to syn. oil, not that much of a gain. hope this helps.
if that doesn't help, you may also want to check your Cat. converter and o2 sensors. those would generally throw a check engine light but still worth checking. in regards to the throttle body, just cleaning it may not fully solve the problem. you might also need to adjust it.
lastly, check your timing. i know it's too early with that kind of milage on it but messed up timing could really screw up mpg.

when I was having trouble with my mpg, I changed out my 02 sensor, oil, diff fluid, sparks, spark wires, air filter and fuel filter, it helped my mileage rise a miniscule amount.

I have the same problem as you, it started once i dropped in a K&N air filter. Havn't gotten a chance to switch back to old air filter to test (been lazy).
Looks like you revived an old thread here, Ry0721. But since you're talking fuel economy here, let me just welcome you to the list of those who suffer from bad MPG.

i am getting 18.4 miles to the gallon. filled up the 15.4 gallon on my 05 Camry 4 cyl. got around 308 miles to empty. however, i drive over 55 miles all the time. i am always cruising around 70 to 80 miles an hour most of the time and i do a lot of stop and go here in new york city. if you stay under 55 miles , you will see the big jump in mileage per gallon.
