ABS acting up

this is a '97 Camry (2.2, rear drums), just replaced the front pads. sometimes when Im coming to stop the ABS goes off. It only happens when I'm coming to a stop, in like the last ten feet under light braking. Sometimes it feels like im just gonna float out into an intersection. Sometimes the ABS light is on sometimes its not. If its lit it stays lit while the car is on, seems random though. I don't think the ABS has ever gone off when the light is on, but I'm not sure. They still do what they are supposed to if I brake hard, again though, Im not sure if they will work still when the light is lit though. sometimes it feels like im gonna float out into an intersection. n

Thanks in advance...

hows the pedal feel? you mightve gotten grease on the linings... the abs wont work if a malfunction occurs resulting in the light coming on. if theres a low pedal, stuck sliders might be the culprit.

It could be as bad as something wrong with the ABS system itself or the electrical components, but it could be something as small as the ABS sensor. If even one of those sensors goes bad (there is one for each wheel) then itll set off the ABS.

When the light comes on, are you actually losing ABS? try hittin the brakes a little hard, see if you can make the ABS kick in (dont hurt yourself tho, of course).

If the light is coming on there might also be an ODBII code that can get pulled. Im not sure if the ABS warning light activates any ODBII codes, but it can't hurt to go to Autozone and get the code pulled (it is free to have them read it).

Definatly get it checked out, since ABS is a safety thing, but i doubt it is hurting your car or anything like that. Especially if you still have ABS.

When the ABS light goes on on the dash the abs is shutting off due to malfunction. Did you bleed the brakes? Crack the bleeders when pressing in the caliper? Sounds like you have air trapped in them. Basically one wheel up front is slowing down faster than the other. Making the abs react trying to slow the other wheel to the same speed. But there is a problem....it is not working correctly and it shuts itself off. If you did not bleed them then check your front speed sensors, make sure the surface is clean. Everytime the ABS light comes on it is storing a code in your abs obdII system. You can get it checked and it will identify the problem area.
