4th Generation Squealy Brake pads

I just did a front end brake job on my car (first time doing it), and replaced my front rotors and pads. I have noticed since then that when braking I sometimes hear a metallic sqeual coming from the front wheels. Does not happen all the time, but mostly when the car is about to stop. Any idea if this is normal? I believe the pads were Semi metallic...The one thing I did not do was apply grease on the plate betwwen the caliper and the brake pad (as recommended by Edmunds.com). I thought the plate was an anti-squeal plate.

Any help would be appreciated.

I woudl take them back apart and put the anti squeal goop on the back of the pads like is recommended. It is also possible you did not seat the pads in correctly and overheated them the first time or two you applied the brakes. If this is the case good luck I have never been able to get them to stop squealing after that happens. IF you take them apart and they seem to be glazed over and look sorta burnt then you ahve done this. IF that is the case you can try using a heavy sandpaper to try and sand it off.

THis is my take on squeaky brake pads. You take metal and rub it up against metal you are bound to get squeaking to some extent. It is inevitable that you are going to get some amount of squealing when you put these two together.

You mean the brake pads and the shims on the back dont you skewe. Dont really want to be putting grease on your pads and rotors.

Break in new pads

Hey there

If new pads require being broken in, does anyone know what sort of milage would be acceptable for a break in period?

Put the grease on all of the connecting points between the back of the pad and the caliper. Also drive 50 or more miles without hammering down on the brakes. 60 - 20 decellerating at first without coming to a full stop, you want to baby them at first so that they will bed properly. If you do not do this you can cause glazing and be replacing your pads sooner due to a crazy amount of squeal.

Either way, aren't you glad you did them yourself, it costs too much for it to be just two bolts and a c clamp.

Can anyone explain to me why putting the anti-squeal grease between the brakes and calipers helps? I have always done this as per directions but never understood just what I was lubricating. Wouldn't these parts remain reletively stationary in relation to each other?

Thanks,
Kep

Well, you have to understand how the brake caliper works. It's pushing a piston against the brake pad which in turn pushes the pad onto the rotor. Over time, the brake pads wear and the piston will have to push out further to get the pads to touch. Anyways, what'll happen is you can develop a squeal due to vibration from braking. The anti-squeal grease clears it up because it prevents the vibrations from being metal to metal contact I've heard my Cam with no grease and then just light grease. It's like night and day. Those things were drivin' me F'in nuts!

4th Generation Bought the grease...now just need the time

I got the grease, but now its just a matter of getting some time to take it all apart againl. Yeah it was pretty satisfying doing the work myself, though I managed to put my back out when I did it.

I did baby the pads for a while, so I hope no glazing occurred. I guess we will see. Also, When I did the job I borrowed a torque wrench when tightening the caliper bolts. is this really necessary? Can I use a regular socket wrench instead?

you don't need a torque wrench for brakes. Only when you put the wheels back on but even then you can man handle it tight. I have found that white lithium spray on grease works well also, plus you don't get it all over you like the caliper goop.
