2nd Generation Gas Consumption...

I was just wondering how much gas does your Gen 2 Camry 4cyl consume... For example, I spend 25 dollars a week driving 10-20 miles (driving from home to school) everyday. I don't think its normal when your 4 cyl Camry eats as much gas as a Hummer.

Driving a half hour to work, and a half hour from work every day, a tank will last me about a week. it rounds out to be about 400 miles to a tank in the city, and 600 miles to a tank on highway. (i know i just tested it driving from maryland to Newfoundland, Canada)

Of course that is not proper milage for a Camry, unless you are paying $25 a gallon for gas! I had my first $30 tankful and I about choked. I am sure glad I don't have an SUV!!!!!

How many miles on the car? Which engine does it have? Is it a stock car or has it been modified? What is your maintenance routine? Did you buy the car new? Do you drive the car in the region that it was first bought? How have you tried to address the poor milage so far?

Need more info,
Kep

If you do a lot of stop and go driving it can eat up the fuel pretty fast, when I am in heavy traffic in the city, I tend to get 13.7mpg w/ the ac on. As long as you are still getting somewhere around 25mpg on the highway I think you are fine. If you still are getting bad highway mpg, change the air filter, fuel filter, 02 sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires and maybe oil

I get bad gas mileage sometimes to, especially when the ac's on, like 14mpg. But The real test for me is when I go on a long trip. I think I have gotten the most like 320 Miles to a tank. and sometimes like 180. But check the normal stuff like plugs, wires, air filter. Maybe a throttle body cleaning, fuel filter and 02 sensor.

mileage depends

most on who drives and where.

18.5 mpg ferrying kids to the nearby school, engine reaches temperature on the return trip .

34 mpg hiway @75 mph, (highest was 39.5 at 55 mph)

This is for a 2liter 1994 Caldina with 3S-FE engine, 4-AT and 47000 mi, mostly stock, Tire pressure at maximum for full vehicle load, Upgraded ignition Directhits.

My 90 3SFE automatic just got 38.7MPG on a trip. That included about 20 miles of city driving too! What an awesome car!

Sorry for that gas bill. And I don't think you need to change oil that often, Your engine is warm most of the time and other than our school ferrying, your oil will pick up very little water and gasoline. We change once every 5000 mi and replace the oil filter at the same time thus can easily afford to pay a litle more for semisynthetic oil.

To keep expenses as low as possible (maybe just a few %) , read up on EPA economy driving tips and keep the car and engine in top shape. Check air in your tires once a month and top off to rated pressure for full load. Measure pressure before driving, a warm tire reads entirely different. Check the tread wear, if it is mostly outside (and you don't scrub the turns) , add a little more pressure. You may feel more road bumps but the lighter-rolling car saves gas. Do not idle cold engine, start driving immediately and be extra careful on the pedal. Cut the engine if it were idling for a minute or more, e.g. at known stoplights.

Be extra friendly to maximise the tips (but if everyone's disposable income suffers from inflated prices, willingness to give may be limited).
