hey, Yesterday when i was turning into Mcdonalds, while on Drive accelerating in the parking lot...my friend accidently hit the shifter into park while i accelerated pretty fast...all of a sudden something sounded like it was spinning really fast making clicking/grinding noise ...while the noise was occuring in park....i try to shift back into D but i couldnt cuz it was stuck...but den a few seconds later...all was normal again...can anyone tell me what was that clicky spinning sound? i was thinking that it was a torque converter not locking into place...do i have anything to worry about? cuz its fine again except for a little tapping noise while accelerating...thanks in advance
how can you hit the gearshift form D to park? don't you have to depress the button and have the break pedal pressed in?

Well it is possible with enough force to break the lock or linkage to the transmission. Also i have done that in my 03 camry before doing 80 but i thre it in reverse. However my car has a computer or something that knows not to shift into reverse when you are moving so i didnt have any problem
Maybe you stripped something idk.
Im not a car expert, just a electronics expert....sorry i try
my car has a shift overide button...but my freind hit the shifter pretty hard causing it to shift into park...i did it once but it went into neutral and it happened right in the middle of an intersection and i reved it pretty high, i was like wtf then i saw it was on neutral...i didt even know i shifted it...i guess my shifter needs adjustment...
Naturally, you should be able to shift from D to Neutral and back without pushing the button on the shifter. As far as pushing it to park, he must have hit it pretty hard.
Its possible to break the linkage between the shifter and the tranny, my freind has a 93 Corrolla and he broke his Shift Button and now he can shift even with the key out of the ignition and the car in park. He did it when he jerked the shifter into L in a Fit of Rage lol
That grinding noise was the parking claw trying to engage into the parking pawl. They are made so that at above certain speed, the parking cam will not engage. They engineer this so that even if you move the shifter into P at 100MPH, the Parking pawl will not engage, as that would be deadly. Your car should be fine if it was a one time incident, but if you constantly do it, it will not be good.
i see...well right when it shifted to P my car suddenly stops but then i reved it and thats when it started to hear the spinning clicky/grindy noise...i waited until it slowed down and stoped untile i shift it back to D because i couldnt shift it in the first place because it was stuck...anyways i think my car is back to normal into its minimal slipping stage...
damn though.. next time be careful Trans aren't cheap But, once it's ready to kick the can, rev her up to about 4K in neutral and slip that puppy into initial "D"... LOL!
the trans should fine.... once i spilled a bottle of coke into the trans .
by the way, ive got an automatic would it stuff up the gear box if i keep changing from "D" to "2" or "L" ???
only do it when you really have to, not to try to accelerate faster, and make sure you have you foot OFF the accelerator, i blew a tranny by using it like a manual, itll do it for a while but then itll say goodnight. in other words YES it will stuff up the transmission

(I am a powertrain engineer, so I know this.)
Girlfriend did this to my Camry shortly after I got it. It's fine now.
