Squeaky brakes when released

My 97 Camry began to develop a harsh squeak sound from the brakes. But normally people complain of brakes squeaking during the braking force is applied.

But my squeak was when the pedal was released. The sound came outside the car, so I knew it couldn't be the pedal itself. I had my daughter step on the pedal so I could narrow down the location of the sound. It was from the rear brakes.

Spent a couple of hours this weekend and removed the drums. Then sprayed the entire brake assembly clean with brake cleaner. Removed the hold down shoe to give me a little wiggle room with each brake shoe. Then lubed six contact points between the shoes and the backing plate. You could see little surface rust spots at those points.

Put it all back together. Voila! No more squeaks.

Just wanted to help anyone out there that might be experiencing this with their Toyota.

Ill have to do that sometime, I have been having the same problem. I am glad I know what it is now .
