USA Shifter is stiff

I have a 98 Camry LE with automatic trans. When I shift from any gear to any other gear, it is quite stiff, as if the cable were kinked. Before I check it out, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help here.

As he said, you may need to add Automatic Transmission Fluid aka the ATF

I think your cable might need adjustment. No harm in checking the ATF; you should that regularly anyways, but I don't think that is the cause.

The problem is not the cable. The problem is the shift pin located on the neutral safety switch. They rust up preventing them from rotating. Toyota has modified the pin to a stainless steel type to prevent this problem. The part is under $20.00 Canadian. Replace this pin and you'll be fine. I replace about two a week at the dealership I work for.
