My 91 Camry 4cyl 5spd has a disease called engine sputtering. I already did a fuel system clean up and treatment. Almost caused an accident when I was on a stop light and my engine sputtered and died and stopped completely. It's dangerous. Need help on this...

If the EGR valve sticks in the open position it can cause the engine to run rough and die. However, it would make it very hard (or impossible) to start. The EGR is easy to pull off and check (buy a gasket beforehand in case you tear up the existing one). If it's all clogged up gently pick it out and use carb cleaner or seafoam to finish the cleaning. Don't get the solvent on the diaphragm if possible or rinse it off with running water if you do.
There is also a mechanism to open & close the EGR valve. In my Gen 1 it is a "Modulator". If that isn't allowing the EGR to close at low idle you get a rough idle or kill the engine.
Another thought, check the air supply tube for any cracks between the air filter and the throttle body.
I had the same style car a couple years back. When mine did it it was the alternator. So, to let you know, a full tune up, check the alternator, and all else fails take it in for a compression test. EGR malfunction can cause it too.

My 92 Camry 4cyl 5spd has a disease called engine sputtering. I already did a fuel system clean up and treatment. Almost caused an accident when I was on a stop light and my engine sputtered and died and stopped completely. It's dangerous. Need help on this...
Just a point of information here for future reference. Your 92 is the first year of Generation 3, not Generation 2. It might make a difference on some things you might be asking here in the future.
^^ If I remember right the Aussies had the gen2 bodystyle through 92. Since his location doesn't tell us his country, I'd hedge bets this may be the case. (just speculating)

Since his location says hayward, I was assuming Hayward, CA. I know, assuming makes an ass out of you and me. Sorry. I appologize to DiscoPotato in advance if I am wrong.
I have come across a few gen 2 model year '92 in California too!
As far as your problem, when was the last time you did a tune-up. Spark plugs, wire, distributor, rotor and air filter? If not recently you are probably due. Unless you have a CEL, start from a tune-up and see if it helps. The EGR valve as far as I know if stuck open on cold starts would cause stalling; does yours do this only when cold or all the time?
Geez do you think that this goes hand in hand with your poor gas mileage? Get a good mechanic to check it out! Or do a complete tune up for starters if it has not had one in a while. Get someone to scan it with a scanner not just a code reader.

Sorry guys I had a typo... my car's 1991. But yeah... after I warmed the engine up to its normal operating temp and if I stop after driving a few seconds it sputters like crazy. Did a complete tune up and they didnt tell me anything about the sputtering... they just told me to do a fuel system clean up. After a few hours of driving it returns to normal and stop sputtering.
Have you done anything else to the car since you began this forum?
Summarizing your posts, it runs fine on start-up. After it first warms up it runs rough at idle. After driving a few hours it runs fine again. No problems at higher RPM, just idle. You have had a tune up (Plugs & wires) which didn't have a noticable effect even just out of the shop. You did some sort of fuel treatment. You also agreed with JComerford and he said that it smoked on startup. Does yours smoke? White or blue?
Sorry. I don't know if your response will be enough for me to see the problem but I definately can't see it now. More information please.
hmm... no smoke at all. The fuel treatment was some kind of gas cleaning thing... the mechanic did some vacuum stuff and yeah... he said it cleaned the injectors but nothing happened to stop the sputtering.
