Gen5 Popping Exhaust Question.

Hi guys, I got a question for you about why my exhaust would pop. you know when race cars or high performance cars shift gears the exhaust pops, well one day i was driving my 03 Camry around and it did that every couple minutes. But it stopped eventually and it doesnt do it anymore.

Im wodering what cuases it to do that. Anyone know what causes this and if its bad for your engine? (and if you dont have an answer for me and want to be a smartass then dont answer)

Unburned gas in your exhaust system from a cylinder running too rich and another cylinder's exhaust flame causing it to ignite. In a worst case scenario, you can rupture your exhaust system, if it keeps running too rich, it can also cause your cats to clog up which will cost $$ to replace. Get a smog check or a engine diagnostic to see if you are still running too rich.

absolutely

since the engine is adding a *more than required* amount of fuel for your load demands, you will use more fuel while driving.

What can cause the engine to burn Rich? I once tried to hook up a Air/Fuel Ratio gauge but never got it working. And my exhaust almost always smells of strong sulfur

One of the more common items to go bad is the O2 sensor in the exhaust. It will be a lot cheaper to get a diagnostic done than trying to replace all the parts that can cause this problem.

Have you checked your air filter recently? Dirty clogged air filter would definitely make your engine run rich.

I have done a full tune up including a new High Flow Air Filter from K&N, I have also gave it a full tune up.

I just took it to my mechanic but he said that computers in cars nowadays will give you a check engine light at the smallest sign of trouble.

I did not get him to check my emmisions tho he offered. And I think i may have done damage to the 02 sensor when i tried installing that gauge so i will have him check that thanks guys

if it's not the o2 sensor, then start checking into anything that would retard the engine's timing- whenever the ecu starts retarding hte timing (i.e. knocking) it will start to dump fuel to prevent running lean
