Yes im probably one of the dumbest people around here...but i need to know if im in any danger....
I spray painted my muffler today black with all purpose spray paint (black gloss), and things look fine, but its not high temp paint. Will it catch on fire if i drive far or high temp or will it just melt off etc? If it is dangerous i guess i need to sand it off, or is paint stripper safe for a muffler?
Thanks for all your help and input. i dont feel like dying since the muffler is next to the gas tank.... .
edit: the paint can says dont apply to a surface over 200F but does it mean just when i apply or a surface that eventually will get hotter than 200F and how hot does a muffler get or can get?
okay thats comforting, i dont mind cos i'll probably get high temp paint soon i just wanted to see how it looked. and how hot can a muffler get?

Thanks again! should i sand off the paint ive got on now before the high temp paint? probably yeah right...to make the surface smoother and have the paint stick better.
I've seen people paint their valve covers with regular spray paint with no problems. I know the VC doesn't get as hot as a muffer.. but it gets pretty hot in there
nah you wont catch any fire using normal paint, you'll probably see the paint peeling off soon or maybe some burn out area. but other than that you'll be ok!
i dont think the exhaust produce 200F+ temp. so its all good mate.

I would say they mean don't have it on anything that gets over 200F.
And yes, get that old paint off of there.
Does make me curious as to how hot the muffler gets though.
it should actually get hotter than 200F or 93C....
anyone know if regular paint stripper does a good job w/out damaging the muffler itself? cos sanding would be....yeah i think some of u know how it goes...
thanks for all the comfort and replies. I have no time to remove it and need my car to drive to school which is close so it wont get real hot. plust i did a test blotch this morning and nothing happend when i got home. I'm getting high temp paint tomorrow.
just sand the paint down to a smooth surface then paint over it with the high temp stuff. it shouldn't give you any problems.... and if it does... big whoop
