Recently when i come to a stop, my front passenger brake seems to be making a groan noise... it really only happens @ lower speeds when i am coming to a stop sign or stop light... what is this a common sign of?
i am driving on the highway a bunch tomororw, so i don't think it is a problem that is going to effect that, but it is just a groan like an eeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrruuuuuuuuuuuuuu when i come to stop... i am going to be putting on a new clutch soon, so i figure i will check the brakes then, but wanted to know if this could be anything to really worry about before tomorrow - since you don't brake a whole lot on the highway, plus my braking is fine - and still as "brakey" as ever when i stop, just noisy in the front passenger right... could it be somethign besides brakes? i don't feel a shimmy...

spray what... the rotor? if so that could be it... i might have got some tireshine or some de-greaser on the brake rotor cleaning the other day... but i would think that would have worn off by now, as it has been almost 4 days... i will look into that though thanks!
i hope this is not a big deal...

spray the rotor yeah, that should eliminate the sound. but i'm not sure if that will fix the problem. if the problem still continues after couple of weeks maybe you should get it check my a mechanic.
^ brake pads are gonna be replaced soon... it is just weird that it is not the normal squeal you hear with a worm pad, it is a clicking/groan... plus it is only on the passenger side..
ahh well, if i drive down to kansas and back this weekend, and the noise does not subside, i will get it up on the lift and check everything out deeper

I hear that too... its like this tiny scrapping noise can beraly hear it...i had my rotors replaced about 6 months ago with some slotted rotors but they got a little rusty...so I'm thinking it might be the rust. I should spray some DW-40 as well
Mine were groaning like that a couple of weeks ago. The day before I took it to the shop, it wouldn't back up. When I started to reverse, the rear brakes would engage. Turns out, my caliper was bad. I ended up needing new everything back there, rotors, pads, and calipers. Aside from the pads, everything was original, so it was time for them to go. Turned out to be pretty pricey, about 830 bucks, but that's for an MR2 in the midwest, so parts aren't exactly readily available. Hope your situation works out cheaper!
hmm that could be a number of things, but i wonder if wheel cleaners and tire shining sprays do any damage to brakes...i'd assume they would make them so they wouldnt affect any brake parts, but it just seems like a lot of people's cars including mines (non oem pads) are being affected by the sprays....and there seems to be no fix other than to replace the pads and resufrace the rotors.
I'm glad someone said it, I was getting really worried that people were going around spraying their rotors with WD 40 or CRC. recipe for disaster that is. Think about it guys, how do brakes work? thay create FRICTION between the pads and disk to generate heat and slow the car, what is the purpose of lubricant? to REDUCE friction, spraying brakes with a lubricant defeats the purpose. The main cause of brake noise (apart from worn disks or rotors) is the pads vibrating (very fast, thats what the squeaking sound it usually) in the calipers, this is why many pads have metal springs behind them. CRC make this stuff called "disk brake quiet" which works a treat. Also, filing a small chamfer in the LEADING EDGE of the pad material i.e. the end that hits the disk first when travelling forward will also help. There was a guy here in Aus where I live who ran over a kid cause he was playing with his brakes and didn't know what he was doing. I'm happy to talk more people through the process. Hope all this helps.
The only thing that can be "greased" are the shims behind brake pad (where it contacts) the caliper and NOT the ROTOR, and the actual contact point on the CALIPER. Most brake pad kits come with this grease and tell you were to put it.
Yes, wheel spray/tire dressing can contaminate your brake pads, I had to have my front ones replaced because of this - the brake technician told me he found an 'oily' like substance on them. When I shine my tires now, I only apply it on a sponge or cloth...no more foamy tire spray for me.
You might want to look at ceramic brakes as a replacement too - they are uber quiet - I 'em . After I had my front ones changed, I decided to change the rear ones myself, it was really easy and relatively cheap ($35 on sale at Pep Boys )
