Dent on my hood

Hi,
I have a dent on my hood which is right in the middle. It is a ding from a piece of metal/wood that fell off of a truck driving in front of me. I got money from my insurance company to fix it, but I want to work on it myself.

It is the size of a nickel, it is barely a dent, but more like just a chunk of paint that was ripped off and a small dimple.

The car was in the rain for a few days and then the bare metal rusted. (this is my 2003 white camry)

So what should I do?

Do I first sand out the rust?
I heard about a rust application thing that will stop the rust from spreading?
How do I smooth the dimple?
Or do I use filler?

If any of you are used to doing body work,
please guide me in the right direction,

thanks

Drew

ps. I will post up a couple pics of my ding once i get a chance

Do you plan on spot painting? Or repainting the whole hood in the process?
Fortunately your car is only 2-3 years old.

Because white is the HARDEST color to match nicely, especially if the original paint it aged.

If you want it to look like crap, do it yourself.
If you want it to look good, go have the hood repaired and repainted by a pro.

Goto a paintless dent removal place and have them work the dent out.

I use a rust treatment, such as Extend by Loctite, on all my rock chips that are down to the metal.

how much did the insurance pay you? Looks like it's maybe a time for a carbon fiber hood...

Be careful with the carbon fiber hood. If you get into a frontal crash, the pieces can come flying through the front windshield and kill you, which has happened in Japan. This guy got into a frontal crash at highway speeds, and the CF piece nailed him in the face. It is rare, but it can happen.

Also, the stock hood does a good job with absorbing crash forces. Carbon fiber does not. If this was a track only car, I would get the CF hood, but for a daily commuter,

So are you saying the countless people here on TN with CF hoods have made a mistake?

I am just stating the fact. It is up to the vehicles' owners to do what they please to the car.
