Add single DIN CD Player below existing AM/FM/Cassette Player?
Hi All,
I have a 1996 Camry 4-DR LE Sedan that came with a Factory Model AM/FM/Cassette Player. There is a bin below the Player with a door with some space for storage. I thought this bin has been provided for extension in case a CD player needs to be added. I would like to add a CD player below the existing Cassette Player. Is that possible? Would there be power supply issues or space issues?
My 92LE came with only the upper deck. I did some work for a friends dad who had a 94 coupe with the stock CD deck. He said I could have it so I just switched the Radio Brackets, which is about a 10min job.
first I removed the U trim piece and undid 4 bolts, removed 2 connectors and put mine in his car and his in my car.
Yes, That is exactly the reason why I want to add the CD Player coz I have an extensive collection of cassette Tapes (about 200) that I cannot let go of. Let's say I splice it in below the Cassette Player. What about the wire harnesses? How do I split them among the 2 players?
the only thing i wouldnt do is splice the 2 units speaker wires together unless you have a couple of switches to disengage one decks speaker wires while using the other . or you could just wire one deck to the front speakers and the other to the rears.
FWIW, the double din OEM head unit (with tape/cd/radio) is probably a fujitsu ten (eclipse) and brand new it's very expensive -- from the dealership anyway, heh. Definitely check depth requirements on that first, because you don't have a lot of room to work with.

I would say that there would be no problems.....only try and make sure that you only turn one on at a time though.....a small current going back to the opposing player won't damage it if it's off

If you can't find any OEM products, do a Google search for a Sony CDX-1000RF. It's a single disc RF modulated cd changer, that is a single din unit and looks like an OEM unit. The sound is excellent. I put one in my 1990 Mazda Miata about 4 years ago and it works and looks great. Here's a link to an article form the Miata.net forum showing how to install it on a Miata: http://www.miata.net/garage/sony_cd.html
It should be a very similiar install on a Toyota. You won't have to move the OEM radio to the bottom on the Camry; there was a clearance issue with the shifter on the Miata that won't exist on the Camry.

Go on eBay and you can find a double-DIN radio/tape/CD player that will replace your current stereo and it will be plug and play in your car.
Something like this stereo will plug right into your car without any rewiring. It has orange illumination though so you might want a different one.
This one will definitely work and has green illumination.
Look for ones with two white plugs together like the one on the bottom left of the latter link above. Also look for a different type of metal than the rest of the stereo on the back somewhere. The different metal is the heatsink for the internal amp.
Check ebay or www.oemvalue.com you can get the OE single disc player or multi-disc player. As far as power it is all plug and play if you go factory. You can also buy some aftermarket double din cd/cass/am-fm radios. I used to have one in my pathfinder that was made by JVC. You can also check on oemvalue and go to a full double din OE radio. Here is a link to oemvalue.com and some of the products that you can use in your car that should work. Just scroll down and you can read descriptions of what they have and wht they will most likely fit in.
Question, i bought an ipod, and the fm transmitter sux w/ aftermarket speakers, u hear every defect and horrible quality, so i decided to get a tape player and use a tape adapter, since all i have is a cd player, after market one at that, i still have the space below the cd player, seems like its 1 DIN, if i go buy a tape player, will everything hook up and fit correctly, my cd player is a 1 DIN........or if n e one has any other ways to play my IPOD in my car let me kno....
^ I never heard of an add on tape player to an aftermarket CD player. What brand and model CD player do you have? If you have an AUX in, many do, you can use that to hook up your Ipod - it will sound better than your tape adapter. If you hook up both, you will need to turn one off at all times.
yea, i went to circuitcity today and bought a new headunit w/ aux in, gonna sell my old one to someone, so everythings good now, the tape idea was a desperate last resort type of thing.....
