i was wonderin what kinds of effects driving wiht O/D off have on the car?....i turn it off pretty often.......but does it hurt or help the engine, does it affect gas mileage also??.....any help would be appreciated
the O/D is there specifically to lower engine speed to get better fuel economy. Turning it off will just keep it in drive. No hurting enging just fuekl economy.........watch your tach with O/D on and off....
yea i was toyin with it last night and when i turned it off the tach jumped up.....i was just wonderin how does it effect fuel economy....the car also feels a lil stronger with it off also
if you understand gears, O/D is your 4th gear. Turning it off at high speeds owns you fuel economy. The only time i turn it off is in highway traffic when im going between 20-40 constantly and i know that the car is shifting too much

i remember one time i turned it off thinkin it was sum kind of limiter on mph.....and i i took it up the gov limiter round 120....i was soooooo scared but happy at the same time cuz camry aint built for high speeds
i doubt that. ive had mine up to 118mph and it was srtuggling and was revving around i think 4500 in 4th. i guess maybe its possible but i would say in 4th not 3rd.
im sure ABOUT 120 is kosher in the 5SFE powered camry, but in third? trust me at that speed, you can forget about gas mileage. at 80 in my RX-7, i can forget about ANY kind of gas mileage.
When you turn off O/D, it limits the transmission to 1st to 3 gear. It will not go into 4th gear and the torque converter will not lock. So the engine spins faster, and is thus able to develop more power and torque, at any given speed so that's why the car feels stronger with O/D off.
It increases fuel consumption because there is slip between the engine and the transmission becaus the torque converter won't lock. The slip turns into heat which is then disapated into the air instead of driving your car forward. The lock up torque converter locks the transmission and the engine together so there is no slip. Aside from that, the engine needs to turn faster so that increase fuel consumption.
