hi
this would be my very first engine mod. I'm planning to replace the factory air filter element with a K&N air filter element. I was wondering has anyone tried this brand of air filter? If so, was there any improvement on power/throttle response and did it increase gas comsumption? Was there any change in sound?
Their will be little or no noticeable change in hp or power. If you want sound, get an intake. Do a search, there's tons of info on intake mods here.
i know that ppl has been making their own intakes and CAI, but i'm not skilled enough to do my own modification, that's why I looked into the drop in filter by K&N. I've looked thru magazines, but all manufactures make is ones for Civic, Accord ... and not Camry. Unless there's intakes made for Camry, I think i'll have to settle with a drop-in filter.
yup! i got a K&N air-filter; it's a cone filter too so no drop in, but it's universal. if you got a V6 u will need a converter(i think that's what they call it...) as well. when i got my filter, it came with it, but that converter can be quite spendy.. but that's only if u have V6 :o i dunno about the newer generations, but this goes for gen 3 camrys. it will increase hp by like... 2hp! haha, nothing special, but as u rev up to 3000rpm+ there is a sound difference and it's quite loud and nice
The K&N drop in filter is identical to TRDs, just without the inflated price. They say it improves gas milage and increases HP.
Let's be realistic for a second..let's assume it does increase HP. How much do you expect it it increase? 1-3HP at best. I don't think that's gonna make any noticable differance anyways. As for gas milage, well..hmm lets see..try easing off the gas peadal and not mashing the gas pedal at every light
BTW- I do have a K&N drop in and notice absolutley nothing! Thanks for nothing SBC :x
RPM, I have a K&N panel filter lying around for a 92...it's in perfect condition...email me if you want to buy it. leftylee@hotmail.com
I second whatever Phi said...minimal hp increase and minimal increase in gas mileage. However, it's reusable and will probably outlast the life of your Camry, so why not?
I just put K & N filter in two days ago..
The car revs up a little quicker... so I guess I did notics a little difference...
I am happy with it.. Car does seem to breath better.
I put a cone in my 87 cam and that really woke 'er up. Of course unbeknownst to us, the air duct leading from the filter box to the grille, where the air is drawin in, was crushed as a result of the light front-end hit the car had taken before I bought it (no frame damage whatsoever, it's all cosmetic and fixed). Therefore once the cone went in and the ductwork came out my 2 liter tire eater really woke up. and it has a nice snarl to it. Cones on an otherwise fine motor won't do much of anything in the power or fuel economy departments. The sound is nice, though.
I've got a K&N drop-in in my 98 5SFE. Noticed a slight improvement in power, and a better sound above 3000 RPM. Worth the $$$, especially since it'll last the life of your car (w/cleaning, of course)...
Same as what everyone else is saying. At first I put in the K&N replacement filter and I didn't notice any difference. Then, my neighbor made a custom intake for my V6 using the K&N cone filter. Again, I didn't feel any difference in any way. So I decided to sell the intake and just used the K&N replacement filter.
wow...thanks guy for all ur inputs
yeah my 94 camry is a V6... so if i go for a cone, i'll have to dish out more cash for the adapter huh? then i guess the drop-in filter it is then... so probably un-noticeable 1-3 hp gain in hp huh? wow...
One word of caution, I know some people have installed intakes (w/a cone type filter) on their cars and have noticed a LOSS of power. The "cone type" filter might improve high RPM horsepower, at the expense of low-RPM torque. Someone documented their 1/4 miles times w/an intake vs. the K&N drop-in and the drop-in was faster... You might want to ask this question on the camryman.org forum, I believe that's where I saw that thread...
