3rd Generation Tachometer going nuts, engine isn't.

Alright, my tach is going up and beyond 8,000 rpm when it should be at about 4750-5000. I have no clue what to do and this is not a joke either. Help is greatly appreciated. It's a 93 camry v6xle.

Well can you verify that the engine speed is actually somethiong else? There is a signal wire that goes to the tach that signals engine rpm. Seems like the odometer is something else because it reads off a speed sensor located at the back of the transmission. There is a drive gear that is spun by the differential and outputs to a three pin plug and those wires send the signal to the instruments. Sounds like an instrument cluster or computer problem to me. Check for loose connections. Other than that I dunno.

Thank you. Thought this was gonna go dead. I'll get back there tomorrow and check the connections.

HoboJoe, Did you find the problem? My tach is occasionaly jumping about 1K and making a loud bussing noise. Let off the gas and it stops right away.
