2nd Generation Souping up a 2.0 5spd instead of buying a V6

I have a 1991 Gen 2 Camry, 5spd manual with the standard 3SFE motor. Is there a turbocharged 4cyl motor that would bolt right on in replacement of the old one? Im looking for at least 200HP. I dont want a V6 because of replacing the tranny, axles, harness and everything else. That is more work than wanted.

Thanks for any help

There are some on this board who have turbocharged the 3sfe. The other option is a 3SGTE. White90dx is one member who has a turbocharged 3sfe. Do a search for his posts.

if you have somebody who can help you figure out the wiring harness, a 3sgte would probably be the easiest way for a gen2

A 3S-GTE will bolt up, but its not a direct replacement.

The axles, wiring, tranny, etc... needs to be figured out.

dropping in the 3sgte is so much easier, no worries about running lean.. or even running the turbo at to hot of temperatures and having a total meltdown.

The tranny works. Not sure about the axles though. You might need a hybrid axle setup, IE: inner axle that fits the tranny and outer axles that fit your hubs.

For the tranny you have a few options:

1. E153 from V6 Camry or Solara. The later ones have dual cone synchros.

2. E153 from MR2 Turbo. The shift selectors are on the wrong side of the tranny (front vs. rear). So it needs be modified so that it'll work in a FWD application.

See link below for info on the modifications:

http://www.geocities.com/zegoat2000/e1531.html

3. Manual tranny from a gen 2 Camry with a V6.

I would go with a E153 from a V6 Camry or Solara.

The V6 that came stock on the gen2 has only 155hp. An auto V6 is the same speed as a 4-cylinder 5-speed... Trust me.

A later 200hp V6 would be a VERY tough fit in the gen2 engine bay.

If you are nice to your tranny, you can bolt up the 3s-gte right to the stock 5-speed. If you shift hard, you will probably break it. You'll have to figure out the correct flywheel/clutch combination. With a motor swap, you will also have a lot of wiring and custom piping to figure out... The motor itself will bolt in fine with your stock mounts.

good upgrades for a 2vz are

1: MANUAL TRANSMISSION <-- first and foremorest thing to do.

2: ECU fuel/ignition upgrade <-- this iwll take you to (Stock) 3vz-fe (and over) power levels.

Search for things i've done to mine, ive a few bolt on mods to my 2vz. Much enhanced from stock!

Toyrolla also has a lightweight flywheel on his 2VZ, with good results.
