3rd Generation I Have a Project car

I just inherited a 1995?(but its a gen 3) Camry, 4 door sadan with 4 cylinders, 5 speed tranny, with 120k mi. on the odometer. Im pretty new at modding and tunning and i have a very basic knowledge of cars. What im wondering is if anyone has any suggestions on what i should change like: the engine, engine accesories, etc. to the car. If i want to change the engine, what is the best one out there for me? I want to make this a very nice car not just decent. Im shooting for higher HP and higher torque. So do you have any suggestions?

Make this your dream car. What would you change if you have an unlimited budget?

Thanks for the Replys.

I wouldn't suggest a turbo to someone with basic car knowledge.

Start off with little mods (intake, exhaust, suspension, etc..) and work your way up. You'll gain experience in the process.

Do you have any maintainence records on the car? And has the car been well maintained?

At 120,000 miles the timing belt should of been changed twice (every 60,000 miles) and the water pump maybe once.

A few tuneups (every 15,000 miles). Regular oil changes every 3,000 - 5,000 miles.

change the Transmission oil, clean the intake manifold using "upper engine cleaner".

you might wanna change the struts and springs.

you might wanna change the Interior Gauge Lights,

here's a DIY

Ok, I don't usually reply 2 these sort of posts but......

1a. Make sure the tyres are inflated CORRECTLY

1b. Get a wheel alignment

1c. Change the motor n transmission oilz

NOW fer the serious stuff.....

1. Pod Filter + ADAPTER = 10% power increase (Camry air box SUX !) - Go to e-bay $40

2. Sports muffler (rear) 5-8 % power

3. Cat back 2" -2 1/2" system preferably s/s steel 12% increase

4. Extractors another 5% power

5. LOWER IT ! - 1 n 1/2" is the norm, at the same time put in some Koni/Sports dampers

6. Get a wheel alignment !

7. Drive it like ya stole it..... Seriously if you want to get the most out of the motor, dont flog the crap out of it straight away.

Give it a bit in say 10 - 15 mph increments because the upper rings leave a "lip" inside of

the cylinder wall & flogging the @rse out of it will allow the pistons 2 stretch, then the upper ring "catches" the lip & BAM..... NEW MOTOR TIME

BIGGEST mistake anyone can make !

And you guyz out there probably thought I was another illeterate Aussie convict....

Nope.... Far from it !

Soooooooo........... any dissention from the ranks?

i still think your a convict! maybe even a dingo. Or a kangawallafox no offence but your figures are out! (Join camcrew.com)

No way in hell do you get 10% gain from a Pod Filter!
Possibly 15% to 30% gain maximum from intank and exhaust mods.

That is - Headers/Exhaust and Muffler. and CAI

Get new larger rims with low pro tires for handling.
Front sway bar.

Well, I might be a convict but at least I'm not a Septic Tank....

ALL Aussie readers are laughing uncontrolably now

Seriously, on my 91 Camry the pod filter made a heap of difference!
But I've had 1 n a half bottles of wine (hic) 2nite so I mighta gotten
carried away on the percentages a teeny bit...LOL

Yup should mentioned Mags with 50/40 series profile tyres, nothing like
a bit of sidewall squirm to upset your ride (hic)

in the matienence standpoint, i would also do a cooling system flush and fill. check your belts, air filter, pcv valve, and brake linings. i would also change the fuel filter and throw in a new set of plugs (ngk or denso), wires, cap and rotor. just for peace of mind, so YOU know what/s been done to it. your knowledge of cars will sky rocket from working on tehm and reading about them.

Urrrgghh ... Not onlyo do you not get 10% from a POD, but you also don't get 15-30% from intake and exhaust mods alone....NO WAY! If you modify the engine internally for larger requirements, then yes, of course you need to up everything, but on a STOCK 5SFE..you'll get 5% from BOTH of those mods! 1kw at the wheels for a POD MAX!! depending on the condition of the old system. Dunno why everything thinks you get SOOO much from these. Yeah they allow the engine to breath better, but you don't get "kW" or torque gains!

And why would you firstly upgrade the FSB on a FWD car??? Don't you think an RSB would be more beneficial on a FWD car??? And why get "new larger rims" without first upgrading the spring and damper setup?? The car won't handle THAT much better until that is done. Ask anyone else on here, that when they changed there spring/damper setup..they notice a large increase in handling ability, much more so from just RIMS.
