Hi,
I have a 98 camry 4cyl that has a hard time starting up. I just gave it a tuneup, here is what i did, i changed the spark plugs, the wires also, air filter, oil, transmission fluid, you name it. Now here is the problem I am having, I would say more than 50% of the time when i go to start the car up, it doesnt start right up, like its hesitating, but when i give it gas while its hesitating the cars will start up and run fine. I have no idea what this could be, the car has about 75k miles on it. Now there are a few things that need to be noted as well, and I dont know if this could be creating the problem. Right near the air filter there is this hose that attaches to it, the hose looks broken of, also had the catalytic converter replaced when I had the tuneup done, but the rest of the exhaust was not done. The piece of the exhaust that runs to the tailpipe sounds like there is something loose or broken inside it (I went under the car to check and also anytime you hit a bump you can here the noise from the exhaust), dont know if this could be part of the problem too. Please Help!!! I dont have the money, and Its baffling me as to what It could be, thanks for your time and look forward to any response ragarding this matter.

sounds like a fuel issue or a vaccume leak. at that, with a cvaccume leak, you'll still get a rough idle even with your foot on the gas. i would suggest that your fuel flter is shot. also make sure the plugs are apped correctly and that you didnt cross any plug wires. the rattling in your exhaust could be a piece of the old converter's internals. if thats the problem, it wont harm anything. if not, you could have a bad hanger and the metal shafts on teh exhaust piping could be hitting teh underside of your car. check those.
thanks mazdaverx7 and jhbhatia vbmenu_register("postmenu_894200", true); for that insight, I will try those too vbmenu_register("postmenu_894152", true); , but regarding the fuel filter, that was changed too during the tuneup, but i have not changed the pcv valve (could that create the same syptoms too?) the other thing that could contributing to the problem is to the right of the air filter there looks like a vacuum that is suppose to be attached to it, that piece is broken off (in other words, what appears to be a vacuum hose is broken off of the air filter assembly housing) also would a car with 75k miles need a EFI service to clean the fuel injectors? and would/could that be contributing to the problem? and how much would an EFI cost?

the pcv valve could make a difference, but I wouldn't say your injectors unless you also have a rough idle
the vacuum hose that's broken is just the return to the block...or somewhere to the engine....it works even if it's not there, but I think if it's continuously off,/broken, you can get a cel
about the starting, it could possibly be that your starter is starting to go, and is weak, so that it can't turn the engine over properly

when the car does start , does it smell flooded? next time it doesn't start right away, pull the plugs and see if there wet, may have a injector leaking down.
also would a car with 75k miles need a EFI service to clean the fuel injectors? and would/could that be contributing to the problem? and how much would an EFI cost?
Have you done an EFI service? I do mine at every 60K miles...I think it costs close to 100 (but with coupons and deals, i get it done for 65-69 something at the dealerships). But thing would be an issue if you also have idling issue, (ie. when it turns it takes few seconds to start...???)
