okay, here's the deal. the problem is with my deck/stereo. i have an alpine deck, and its in pretty good working order. i also have an amp and a pair of twelves in the trunk. my stereo will play fine when i start up and when i start driving, but then whenever i steer to the left, the sound cuts out. now, here's the REALLY weird part--the subs keep going. the deck stays on and it functions like it should, and the amp and subs get the music like they should, but all four speakers just cut out. i have to return to dead center on the wheel for them to kick back in. anything over like 10 degrees of a left turn and the speakers cut out. it usually only happens if i'm going faster than 10mph. i dunno what's wrong. then i took off the safety pad to inspect the wiring and connections that go to the wheel thinking i have a short on a ground wire or something, and then all of the sudden my guages dont light up any more! what the hell is going on?!
i need some help badly, i'm really in the dark on this one. thanks guys.
jon.
ps. the volume of the deck affects the problem somewhat. when i start turning it up really loud, it will cut out a bit sooner than if it were at a low volume, but the change in volume isnt directly proportional to when it cuts out.

i had a simliar problem but ...whatever that is connected to my 5 channel amp gets cut off...and i found out it was due to a faulty crossover that was connected to one of my rear speakers...so then i took it off and everything works fine with no problems...so now im running one with no crossovers...its an audiobahn anyways, im going to put in my mb quart qm 100 in the fronts and Boston acousitc proseries in the back today...hopefully my sytem would sound badass consideirng how much i spent compared to the audiobah setup...
so, no one has any advice for trying to find the short? at least i know the area it would be in, the steering column. other than that, i'm not quite sure how to diagnose it. any ideas?
one of your speaker wires is shorting out, the internal amp of the deck shuts down its output to save itself.
Most likely its one of your door speakers moving slightly, check the terminals on the back of the speaker, its prolly barely touching the metal behind it.
but check your rear speakers first cause thats easier.

but why would one of my speaker wires short only when i steer to the left? anyways, that makes sense about the internal amp turning off to save itself.
i'll check the wiring nonetheless, about to go to the store...i'll just be doing connections right now. tomorrow reserves itself for my trusty flashlight and i...sounds like fun
ha ha ! i found the problem and fixed it! i was thinking about how illusive 562 mentioned that he had a problem with a crossover, and that if one speaker shorts out-- the internal amplifer will cut off power to all of the speakers. well, i was checking out my trunk (im not even sure why), and i noticed that the crossovers i bought (scosche) were just hanging down off of the speakers in the accessory deck and actually hanging in the trunk. i looked at the rear drivers-side speaker to see if there was faulty wiring, and i discovered that part of the terminal on the speaker had broken off! haha. it was all still connected and everything, but the problem was is that everytime i would steer to the left, the crossovers weight would pull the wire and terminal over towards the right and ground out to the chassis. so, i decided to just pull the rear speakers since they are blown anyways. im missing some of the highs, but at least i dont have to take slow-wide turns to make sure it doesnt cut out.
good stuff
wouldnt have figured this out if it hadnt been for toyotanation. thanks guys, you've rekindled my interest in my gen2 lol. peace.
