Universal Catalytic Conv. Is there a break in peirod?

I jus put on a new cat on my camry about a week and a half ago and I can now and then smell a smell like the cat is going bad. It is new from the shop, but Universal. I wanted to know if there is a break in peirod where there will be a smell issue like the old one, or if this is a common issue?

Thanks all.

smells strange, like hot fiberglass? If you know what that smells like. Some universals heat up more than OEM causing a smell. It should subside after a few weeks after installation, but if you drive on the highway for awhile and WOT a few times right before stopping, at an exit, etc. You will smell it again. They just do that. It never hurts to check for leaks though. I have a HiFlo universal on my Jetta. After driving at over 80mph for awhile (15 minutes or so) I smell it a little bit, had it on there for about 15K so far. May cause you to go thru after cat 02 sensors faster too. When I tried to save a bit and use universal 02 sensors for after cat I ran through them, switched back to OEM and it is all good now.
