Do a search on the VSV valve on here. This has been covered and there is a lot of good information on it. I had the same problem. It ended up being the VSV valve under the intake manifold. Check around before buying anymore parts, I'm sure you'll see it will most likely be the VSV valve but do the search and see what you think.

That sounds like that might be the problem. Do you have to take the intake manifold off to replace it? and Where is a good place to buy the VSV valve?
thanks alot for the help

No.

You can get to it from underneath the car.

hello,

ok so the check engine light has gone off by itself. I haven't replaced the VSV. Is this normal? Doesn't the computer need to be erased before the light goes out?

Don't forget to consider the tube supplying exhaust to the EGR valve, it can get all gummed up. In my '90 model the EGR valve has a rubber tube going to a "modulator" that got crudded up also. It was an easy thing to clean. The other considerations are also valid but before you just go throwing parts at it figure out what is actually wrong. There are vacuum checks that I can run on the 1990 model to verify if the EGR and modulator are operating well. I suspect that yours too has a procedure determine this.
