Gen5 Question...

I own a 2002 Camry LE 4Cyl. My tranny blew up so I got a rental 2005 Camry LE 4Cyl. My question is it a dramatic horsepower difference in mines than in the 2005 because I floored it and felt like I was in a strong V6. But the engine looks the same to me under the hood.

A change in tranny can have this much improvement! It's a great shame that we are still stuck with the 4-speed in the land-downunder. Just wish I could experience the difference myself!

Eh... thats not right. It has the same hp and the same amount of torque. You've got to consider the fact that you have a 2002... in 3 years, depending on how well you maintained it, and obviously you pushed it pretty hard to blow the tranny, it'll have a great impact on performance.

I must also note when I turned it on I was like WOW. It sounded like a freaking 2005 Grand Prix 3800 V6. When I mashed the gas it felt wonderful. If the 05's is that fast. I wonder how fast the SE V6 is.

Again... the reason your tranny blew is because you abused it. When its abused, it won't run as well as a new car. Thats why it feels so much different. I don't abuse my Camry at all, and my car runs like new after 60k. Tranny has nothing to do with how an engine sounds when you crank it. The 05 i4 is not faster than any previous Gen 5 model. Its THE SAME. The only difference is the slightly more efficient low end torque because of the extra gear.

I think engine sound is really associated with the size and restrictive-ness of its exhaust components, right? I'm still a relative newbie.

However, I do believe that as long as the car in question is well maintained, the car feels 'better' than when it was brand new as all the components have 'grown accustomed with working together'. Again, I could be very wrong!

It's a shame that purchasing and changing the trans is such a $$$$$costly$$$$$ and time-consuming exercise. Don't know why Toyota Australia would not use the 5-speed in the I4 even in our Gen5.5

Actually I remember long ago they said in the 2005 they replaced the engine type. It is still a 2.4 VVT-i but it is a different remake. Thats why its faster I think. Someone may can research that for me.

Consumer reports tested both gen 5 and 5.5 4Cly Camries. The accerlation and milage numbers they gave were really close to each other.

also, shorter gears are more advantageous to people who don't know the power band of their cars

if you know where the power is, longer gears aren't a problem at all

but more gears do give you better mileage tho

With the 5 spd tranny, 1st gear will have higher ration to better multiply torque to the wheels for startup. Also with the 5 spd, it is easier to map the shift points to match the hp/tq curve of the engine to keep it in a narrower peak range to obtain better acceleration/mileage so your power won't drop off as much as it shifts up.
