Noisy AC Compressor (I Think)

At idle, there is a rattling/knocking noise which goes away if I turn off the AC.

Any suggestions on what to check? Bad belt, compressor, low R134? What should I check (and how, if it is not obvious)?

Thanks.

Can the compressor bearing be replaced (without replacing the whole compressor) if it is that bearing?

I have heard that you can add oil to the r134 but there are two types, PAG and Esther(?). PAG has multiple weights. So you would need to find out what you have in there first. You're not going to add much, an ounce or two

There is an additive called ICE 32 that you may want to see if it is compatible with your system. It has a good reputation. Add one ounce.

Luck,
Kep

What year model is the car. They had some problems with loud compressors on Gen 3's. I got so tired of telling people that it was normal operation when I was working on them. NO matter how many we would put on to try and cure the problem it was always there.

if it was a bearing in the compressor, i would guess that it would more than likely be the pulley one, which it can't be because it would be making the noise all the time (the pulley runs all the time) I would check the clutch on the compressor, the refrigerant level, and if the sound really is the compressor (maybe the fan inside switching with compressor?) Most shops will charge you a new compressor, not repair.
