2nd Generation Starting Problems...

So this only happens from time to time and there is no pattern or sequence to it. Just really random times. What happens is that I put the key in the ignition and turn it to start the car but it just does this small click sound and nothing happens. All the lights on the board light up normally and the battery is good for sure. So whenever this problem happens all I have to do it push it a little bit and drop the clutch and it will start really fast. I have a stick 1990 Toyota Camry. Do you know what would be the cause of this random not starting situation?

Thanks

Cristian

haha....haven't heard of anybody doing a push start in awhile....

but back on topic though- you're starter's dying and it's time to get a new one
instead of rolling the car to start, you can also hit the starter with a hammer and it will usually work as well, but regardless, it's time to get a new one- all these methods are just temporary methods so you don't get stranded

what you need is a starter relay, go to your local auto electrician and ask for a starter relay because your car sometimes doesnt start, thats the quick fix it can last over a year, till you buy a new starter motor, but i havnt had a prob since.

The relay is working correctly. That is the click you are hearing. The starter is not turning. This is most likely caused by bad starter contacts inside the starter. You can replace the whole starter or take it off the car and take it apart and replace just the contacts inside the starter, if you are so inclined.

This link describes the procedure with some really good pictures:
