FE vs. GE

Just like all car manufacturers, I know Toyota has different sized engines with different # of cylinders, and Toyota classifies them as families. Anyways, my question was what is the difference between FE and GE? What part of the engine is this and what makes them different? All I've heard of and know is that you can modify the GE engines quite a bit but not the FE engines. Care to shed some light?

The F and G are more in relation to the cylinder head design.
A F engine is economy oriented and the G is performance oriented.

G = twin cam (wide angle, 45 degrees or more between the intake and exhaust valves)
F = "economical" twin cam (narrow angle, around 22 degrees

The FE head is a narrow angle twin cam head. It is designed for high torque and power in lower RPMs and helps provide good fuel economy. The timing belt or chain drives only one of the cams in the head. The other is driven by gears.

The G head has a wider angle. The two cams are both driven by the timing belt. This allows independent adjustment to the timing. The engines with GE heads have more power, but that comes at higher RPMs. They have less power at lower RPMs generally.
