it depends on the mileage of the cam. Ive heard if you switch to synthetic after using regular oil forever you can crack seals and you may have a leak somewhere. Just something to think about. I have to get my rear main seal fixed but i am a broke college kid who cant afford a 600 dollar seal right now.

I switched to it when it was a little over 70k now its almost 78k But i think its because of the driving... and if it leaks all the oil will leak out right ?

i just switched to full synthetic today and on the way home i smelt burning oil, but things seem fine now. I'll have to keep an eye on it since i drive HARD constantly. I hope nothing goes wrong cos everything feels smoother now, plus i got a high end mobil 1 filter so hopefully i dont have to change this oil for a bit....like 5+K...

All i can say is ive never seen the dipstick so clean.....i had to struggle to see if there was actually oil there. And just wondering...does synthetic turn colors like regular oil?

erm, no. nothing wrong with switchign to synth late. and about leaks IT SHOULDNT BE THERE in the first place, the thicker mineral oil was just gumming it up but ITS STILL THERE.

Synthetic oil is a crock

Check some real lube experts ---http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi
They typically say synthetic is useless except provides better cold weather performance at cold start up . I am talking -20 or worse. Safe your money & go with cheapest oil grade as spec'd by Toyota

WIth any oil in any engine there is a certain amount of oil that is allowed to be used that is considered normal. SInce the oil is coating the cylinder walls and the valve stems. This oil may be burned by the engine. What is normal all depends on driving conditions and the viscosity of the oil. Is the oil a lower viscosity than the dino oil you were using. If so that may contridute to more oil being burnt. Also have your driving habits changed in the recent past. This can also make it appear you are using more oil than before when in actuality you are using the same amount. In short stop and go driving you will have more fuel and condensation entering the oil so it will appear that the oil is always full. However when you go to highway driving where the engine can get up to normal operating temperatures for an extended period of time this fuel and condensation will evaporate. If you are using more than 1 quart of oil in between changes then I would recommend that you have it checked out. If it is 1/2 quart then it is probably nothing to wrry about right now. If you look in your owners manual it explains some of waht I jsut said and may be easier to understand. Just look in the index under oil consumption.

One major factor being overlooked, and the main reason I use synthetic, SLUDGE. Synthetic doesn't sludge like conventional oil will.

sludge isnt a problem with regular change intervals.

another reaso nis synth isnt as hydroscopic as minerla oils.
