possible coolant temp sender problem

I'm beginning to think that my coolant temperature gauge is giving me inaccurate readings. I replaced the sender about a year ago, and put teflon tape on the threads. I've heard that the teflon tape could act as an insulator and keep the sender from functioning properly. Could that effect cause my gauge to gradually read higher and higher even though the actual coolant temp is increasing slowly?
